Guiding the dragon was easy now. With small commands through the connection he'd created, Y/N could cause it to bank, soar upwards or drift down with ease. The dragon obeyed his every command, evidently just happy to be out and in the sky again.
As they flew, Y/N turned and smiled back at his three friends.
'He's a capable one, despite his bad eyes,' said Y/N, yelling slightly to ensure his voice could be heard over the wind whipping past as he patted the scaled hide.
'This is madness!' yelled Ron. 'Years ago, you were saying these things couldn't be tamed!'
'Under normal circumstances, they can't,' said Y/N, 'but this one was keen for anything else. He has this idea now that being with me means being safe. As long as I keep that up, he's probably going to be loyal.'
'What did you actually do with it?' asked Harry.
'The flows of magic move through all living things. It's how we can get animals to trust us in general, it's the same logic behind Buckbeak trusting us when we bow. If the animal knows your worthy, it'll concede. This dragon knew I was worthy, he has conceded. In turn, I promised to protect him and I have done that.'
'So you can just use magic to speak to animals?' asked Hermione.
'Not speak as such, just general messages, like those... what do you call them? Zookeepers, do. They don't fully understand me, but they know my intentions, they know I'm not here to hurt them. It wouldn't work on all of them, most don't trust humans, but this one knew he had no other choice. And now he's grateful for it.'
As though confirming, the dragon let out a great roar, a burst of flame soaring wildly into the air.
'So where is "he" taking us?' asked Harry.
'Where else? Back to Hogwarts!'
Honestly, it was one of the highlights of Y/N's entire life, soaring over the wilderness and rolling landscapes of the country atop the back of a creature he'd all but deemed untameable.
Though he made sure to stay away from most of the major points of activity, avoiding major cities. The last thing they needed was news of dragons existing.
As they reached the sprawling plains that surrounded Hogwarts, Y/N sent his tethers outwards, wrapping them around the protective enchantments of the castle in the distance and gently parting them, creating a small door in the protective boundary.
The dragon shot straight over Hogsmeade and through the opening Y/N had created, sliding to a halt on the grounds.
With a snort and a ruffle of its wings, the dragon lowered itself down, allowing the four of them slip off its back.
The moment Hermione had slipped off next to him, she threw her arms around Y/N, clinging to him as the two of them looked back towards the dragon.
'Reckon Hagrid would be alright with looking after him?' asked Y/N lightly.
'What, a pet that he's wanted for most of his life? Yeah, reckon he'd be into it,' said Ron, smiling as he glanced up at the beast. 'They aren't that scary when they aren't trying to kill you.'
'Speak for yourself,' said Hermione worriedly.
Harry let out a yell of pain and slumped forward. Y/N echoed it, both of their hands leaping to their heads.
'His scar?' asked Hermione and Y/N nodded.
'It's a bad one too from the feelings of it, dear lord.'
It took a few minutes for Harry to come back to them and when he did, he was white as a sheet, his eyes roaming up to Y/N.
