keralis pov
The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the water, painting the sky in soft oranges and purples. The island was quiet, save for the occasional whisper of the breeze and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. We had docked for the day, not on the mainland but on one of the outer islands. It was remote, peaceful, and perfect for a camping trip. We had enough equipment to spend the night here, and after such a tense dive, we decided to make the most of it.
Beef, Xisuma, and I had agreed that we'd call it a day, as we didn't have enough oxygen to dive any longer. I was just walking along the shoreline, enjoying the crisp air, when I noticed a familiar pair of teal eyes peering at me from beneath the surface of the water. I recognized them immediately-there was no mistaking those eyes. It was him.
He was there, just below the surface, watching me quietly. For a moment, it felt like he was simply observing, but the intensity of his gaze told me he might want to say something-or maybe he just liked being close. Either way, I decided to approach him, making sure I was far enough from the shore to avoid drawing attention from Beef or Xisuma.
I stepped carefully into the water, my boots sinking into the cool sand as I waded through. When I reached a rocky outcrop where the water was shallow, I paused and waited.
And then, just like I expected, he emerged. His head broke through the water first, then his body, sleek and graceful, his fins glistening in the fading light. He looked almost ethereal, framed by the setting sun, as if the ocean itself had crafted him.
Before I could stop myself, I found the words slipping out, my voice smooth and teasing, "God, you're beautiful."
His reaction was immediate. He sputtered, as if I'd caught him off guard, his eyes wide in surprise. His fin ears drooped slightly, and for a moment, I thought I might have embarrassed him more than I intended. But then, he seemed to lose his composure completely.
In a flash, he ducked back into the water, disappearing with a soft splash. I couldn't help but laugh to myself, the sound of it blending with the waves crashing against the rocks.
"Not so shy now, are we?" I called after him, my voice teasing but light.
He resurfaced a moment later, still looking flustered, though his eyes no longer held the same confidence they usually did. They flickered nervously, avoiding my gaze. I was pretty sure I saw a faint blush creeping across his features, even beneath the dimming light.
"Stop looking at me like that," he muttered, his voice softer than usual, as if he was embarrassed.
"I can't help it," I replied, my grin widening. "You're just so easy to fluster."
He glanced at me, and for a second, there was a flash of something-a mix of frustration and amusement. "You're impossible," he grumbled, but there was no bite in his words.
I chuckled and leaned back against the rock, crossing my arms as I kept my eyes on him. "Impossible? Maybe. But I don't think you mind too much."
He shot me a pointed look, but it wasn't as sharp as it normally was. There was a reluctant hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips, though he tried to hide it.
"You're a pain," he muttered, but I could tell he was starting to relax.
"Pain or not," I said, shrugging, "You can't deny that we have a connection."
He gave me a side-eye but didn't argue. Instead, he settled a little lower in the water, just enough to keep his face above the surface. "You think so, huh?"
I nodded, keeping my tone casual. "I know so. And the way you look at me when you think I'm not paying attention? It's kind of cute."
That comment made him stiffen slightly, his tail flicking in the water with a sharp motion, but he didn't dive back under. I could see the edges of his fins twitching, trying to suppress the flush on his face.
