Chapter 23: Transaction

General Manager Huang brought the two people into his office. After they sat down on both sides of the large desk, he did not rush to speak. Instead, he opened the drawer, took out a pack of cigarettes, shook out a cigarette, and then took out a lighter to light the cigarette. Then he smoked the cigarette in big puffs without saying a word, staring at the crystal ashtray on the table, as if he wanted to see something from the ashtray.

Gu Xiaofan kept looking at General Manager Huang, and seeing that he was just smoking and not saying anything, he became anxious and wanted to speak, but he saw Zhong Han just watching calmly on the side, so he had to suppress the desire to ask for the time being.

When General Manager Huang quickly finished smoking a cigarette and took out the second one from the cigarette box and lit it, Zhong Han asked, "General Manager Huang, is it difficult to say this?"

"What's so difficult to say? I'm just considering Mr. Ren's reputation. After all, he was a well-known person when he was alive..." General Manager Huang looked embarrassed and defended himself unhappily.

In response to his words, Zhong Han just smiled. Anyone with a discerning eye could see that his smile only contained one meaning, which was disbelief.

Mr. Huang obviously didn't want to get serious about this issue. He cleared his throat and looked at Gu Xiaofan: "Is it convenient to talk about this topic in front of this young lady?"

"When performing official duties, Mr. Huang can ignore her gender." Zhong Han also looked at Gu Xiaofan and said to Mr. Huang with a smile.

Gu Xiaofan nodded along, fearing that General Manager Huang would continue to use her gender as an excuse for not wanting to cooperate with the work. Even though she had been doing "semi-clerical" work before and had worked for a few years, there was one thing that Gu Xiaofan was very clear about. In some professions, such as doctors and policemen, gender awareness must be treated as nothing in many cases. When General Manager Huang saw that both of them had the same reaction, he could no longer refuse and nodded. Before he started to tell the story, he asked Zhong Han to test the waters: "Did Dai Mei have anything to do with Lao Ren's death?"

This sentence was equivalent to admitting that he and Dai Mei knew each other. Zhong Han neither admitted nor denied it, but only said: "This is also the question we want to know the most right now."

General Manager Huang put out his cigarette in the ashtray, brushed off the tiny ash on his pants, and said in a nonchalant tone: "I do know Dai Mei, but I'm not very familiar with her. She is the woman next to Lao Ren and often attends some social events with him. She is very pretty, but I am a very principled person. I won't talk about whether I am tempted by beauty or not. Anyway, I can see that the relationship between Dai Mei and Lao Ren is not simple. Even if she is a fairy from heaven, I can't have anything to do with her."

Gu Xiaofan thought that she was not a cunning person and her mind was usually quite simple. However, even so, after listening to General Manager Huang's words, she immediately felt that this man in his fifties was trying to cover up something, or in other words, he was simply trying to take the initiative to clear himself.

Zhong Han could of course hear General Manager Huang's intention to remove himself from the situation, and nodded: "According to what you said, someone else is still involved with Dai Mei? Do you mean that Dai Mei has private dealings with his business partner behind Ren Xuefeng's back?"
