Chapter 24 - Yes
I never heard from Landon the rest of the weekend. On Sunday I decided to reply to Trace's email. I must have written and deleted at least ten different drafts. I couldn't figure out what to write. Finally I just wrote from my heart.
"Hey Trace,
I'm glad you emailed me. I too, don't want to leave things the way we did. I want to be totally honest with you, because the one thing I have learned is that any other way, just doesn't seem to work for me. So, being honest I should tell you that I have thought of you often. I too felt a connection with you from the first time we met, but (and I'm sorry that there has to be a 'but,') it could have been the alcohol. And yes it was a great kiss.. a really great kiss. But, (sorry another 'but') I am still trying to work things out with my boyfriend and truthfully things are not going well. But, (last one I promise) I want things to go well. I want to work things out with him. So, to be fair to you, I don't want to keep you in limbo. As much as I would like to spend the next six months emailing and phoning you and getting to know you, I won't do that as long as there is still a chance for things to work out between my boyfriend and me. You should know though, that I already believe you are a good guy Trace. Thank you again for everything and I will see you in September.
Hopefully we can be friends,
Karis :o)"
It was a tough email to write because truthfully I think Trace is a great guy. It would be so easy to keep him on the back burner in case things don't work out with Landon. But, that would not be fair to Trace and if Landon ever found out, I know he would never forgive me. So I made my decision and sent the email.
I thought if I gave Landon a few days, he would eventually come around, but a whole week has gone by and he has pretty much avoided me completely. He didn't sit at our lunch table and he never once even glanced in my direction or talked to me during our one class together. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that he isn't going to get over this. Maybe I shouldn't have sent that reply email to Trace afterall.
"Miss Wade, are you planning on joining us today?" Mr. Matterson is standing at the front of the class, half way through a physics lesson. "You daydreamed all through my Chemistry class first semester Miss Wade and now here you are again lolly gagging through my Physics class." He has his hands on his hips and his eyebrows are raised. "Should I take this personally?" His lips are pursed and he looks like a fish. "Am I that boring Miss Wade?"
My head whiplashes around to the front of the classroom as soon as I hear my name mentioned. It doesn't take me long to figure out that he's asked me a question and is now waiting for my answer. I have no clue what Mr. Matterson asked. All I heard was 'lolly gagging.' Who says 'lolly gagging' anyway? It feels like he's expecting a yes or no answer. I figure I have a 50-50 chance, so I take a guess and boldly answer, "Yes!"
The whole class starts to laugh and Mr. Matterson's eyebrows look like they are going to pop right off the top of his head. "Let me get this straight Miss Wade, you're saying, 'Yes' - I am that boring?"
Oh Shasta Shite! Wrong answer. "I mean no.. ah no sir, I'm sorry sir," I grovel as I hear students still snickering around me. "You are not boring sir." Yeah right and I'm not sucking up at all. I sit up in my seat to let him know that I mean business and to show him that he now has my undivided attention. Jeesh! It's next to impossible to stop daydreaming in this boring class.
Finally Mr. Matterson turns back to the chalkboard and continues his lesson. I look around the room and see a few of my friends looking at me with sympathy in their eyes. They smile at me as if to say - 'we feel your pain, as we too know how boring this class is.' Then they look back to the chalkboard and once more they look as bored as I feel.
