Chapter 27 - Cheers!
I finally got over the emotional rollercoaster of my grandma-with-the-white-hair's funeral. It still shocks me, how hard it hit me. It wasn’t so much that I was that close with my grandma. It was that the funeral made me think about death itself. It made me think about losing people that I loved. I still don’t know how Landon got through losing his dad.
Time doesn’t stand still though, and summer has finally come to our small town. Along with the approach of summer, we are nearing the end of our school year and making our final preparations for prom.
When I think back to my grade eight prom, it makes me laugh. We were so immature and nervous. Rob barely spoke to me the entire evening. I had most of my fun hanging out with my girlfriends, as I’m sure Rob did with his friends. The only time we really hung out together at all, was during the handful of slow dances that played that night. Even then, we were so nervous and stiff. I remember feeling awkward when we danced together. When I look back at the pictures that my mom took, we all looked so young.
Now here we are four years later, getting ready for our high school prom. Kate is ecstatic that she is going to the prom with Matt and I am going with Landon. She was definitely surprised though to find out that I had asked Landon and not the other way around. Rob finally worked up the nerve to ask Sarah and she said yes. Even Yanik has a date. He asked Meghan and though she isn’t my favorite person, I am happy for Yanik.
Once Kate realized that we were all going and all had dates she went crazy planning the perfect prom night. She has everything organized right down to the smallest detail. She arranged manicures, pedicures and hair appointments for the both of us. She scheduled a limousine to pick us all up, which will drive us to prom and then to the afterparty after prom. She even took me with her to the local flower shop so we could pick out boutonnieres for the guys.
I have nightmares just thinking about all of the shopping trips that Kate put me through. I’m not crazy about clothes shopping and shopping for a dress is just about the worst torture I can imagine. After three separate trips to three different malls, Kate finally agreed that we had found the perfect dresses. I thought I was home free, when Kate informed me that we still had to go shopping for the perfect shoes. I now know that I hate shopping for shoes, even more than I hate dress shopping. After two more trips to the Barrie malls, Kate was finally satisfied that we had found the perfect shoes to match our perfect dresses.
I have never had a manicure or a pedicure before. I survived the surprisingly pleasant ordeal and am now sporting a sheer pink polish on my nicely manicured fingers and toes. My overpriced hairdresser informed me that she took my naturally blonde hair and clipped it gently back on one side and left the rest to hang in cascading curls down my back. She told me that she strategically placed little rhinestone clips throughout my hair for added glamour. All I know is that I like how it looks.
As much as I hated the process of picking out my dress, I have to say I love the end result. I never thought I would say that about a dress, but it really is pretty. It is a gorgeous, soft pastel blue color and the sweetheart neckline is held up with thin spaghetti straps. The lace bodice is accented with a satin band and small bow. My favourite part though, is the layered tulle skirt, which sits just above my knee. I am wearing my silver double heart necklace that Landon gave me at Christmas and Kate helped me find dangling silver heart earrings that sparkle with rhinestones to match. I have pretty silver open toed sandals that I have worn around the house for the past month to break in. Kate says the last thing we want is sore feet at prom. When I am finally dressed and look at myself in the mirror I am pleased with the results. I feel pretty and very feminine.
