I paced the kitchen floor as I waited for her to answer the phone. I just wanted answers, answers to how I wasn't enough. Why wouldn't she want to go that length with me?
I leaned on the counter, waiting, as I watched the food cook in the skillet.
"Hello?!" I heard her answer the phone while giggling. I heard other voices, ones I made out to be Beyoncé and her sister.
"Man bye, I'm taking a break." I heard Beyoncé say as she giggled. That just heightened the way I was currently starting to feel about her.
"Bring that lazy ass back!" Robyn said.
"My bad, hello?"
"Hey Robyn."
"What's up Lauren? You good? I heard you took a few weeks off." She spoke actually sounding concerned. This was one of the areas I loved about her most.
"I could be better." I answered truthfully. Emotionally and physically, I've recently not been there. I used my PTO to take some time to myself. I just came back from visiting my mother for a week. It was so lovely but I was planning on knocking out whatever was bothering me.
Robyn being my first call.
"I'm sorry. I know it was probably a lot with the show and maybe I did too much. So, I'll apologize for that. I have to work on not stressing everyone else out because I'm stressed out. It's not fair. So, again, I am sorry." She opened the door.
"That's all you have to apologize for?"
"What do you mean? What else would I have to apologize for?" She was genuinely confused and I couldn't help but laugh.
"How you treated me?"
"I'm confused- how did I treat you Lauren?" I heard her go into a more quiet space, closing a door behind her.
"Robyn there isn't that much confusion in the world. You treated me like the only thing I was good for was sex. I wasn't enough to be more?" I said over the phone there was complete silence. Her chuckling broke the silence eventually.
"What's funny? I don't recall telling a damn joke." I spoke as I walked over to the stove to take the meat off of the skillet.
"You can't be serious-"
"I'm dead serious actually." I kept a straight face like she could see me through the phone. I knew she heard it in my tone though.
