Rono and Konane had been waiting anxiously for their friends, who had gone to search for a lost animal earlier that day. Konane fidgeted with his hands, a sense of unease settling in the pit of his stomach. "What's taking them so long? I have a bad feeling about this," he murmured, casting a worried glance at the dirt path that led into the dense thicket beyond.
Rono shared his concern. "I know, right? It doesn't make sense for them to be held up like this just to find a little animal. I hope nothing bad happened to them," he replied, furrowing his brow.
"What if they stumbled upon that creature that has been killing the animals around here, or maybe they got lost?" Konane's voice was tinged with worry.
"Nah, they know this rancho like the back of their hand. And if they did encounter something dangerous, I'm sure old Grandpa can handle it," Rono reassured, though uncertainty lingered in his own mind.
As the evening shadows lengthened, a voice called out from the darkness outside. "Rono and Konane, where are you?" It was Eztli, their friend, a tinge of urgency in her tone as she repeated their names over and over.
Konane peered through the window, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "I see Eztli, but... where are the others?" he wondered aloud, his brow furrowed in confusion.
"What is she doing out there? Why is she looking for us in that direction?" Rono pondered, a sense of unease creeping over him.
Konane hesitated before speaking, his voice low. "Should we go out and tell her we're here?"
Rono hesitated, recalling the warnings of Peta's grandma about not opening the door for anyone. "Yeah, but remember what Grandma said. We shouldn't open the door for anyone unless we're sure it's safe. I don't understand why, though," he mused, a worried expression on his face.
"Doesn't Eztli sound a bit strange to you?" Konane interjected, his eyes narrowing as he observed their friend from the window.
"Now that you mention it, she does seem a bit off," Rono agreed, a flicker of concern in his eyes."Remember what Eztli told us about cameras and recorders? She said that ghosts can reveal their true forms through them," Konane reminded, his voice a whisper.
A sudden realization dawned on Rono. "I have a recorder with me! Let me go get it," he exclaimed, hurrying inside to retrieve the device before handing it to Konane.
"Now, I'll record her, and you take a picture," Konane suggested, a sense of trepidation in his voice.
As Konane started recording, a chilling voice echoed from the recorder, sending shivers down their spines. Rono's eyes widened in fear as he listened. "What... what is that sound?" he stuttered, his heart pounding in his chest.
Rono quickly captured a picture of Eztli through the window. When they gazed at the image, a spectral figure appeared beside her, its features twisted and ethereal.
Just as they turned their attention back to the window, Eztli was nowhere to be seen. A sense of foreboding gripped the two friends as they stood in the room.
To their horror, they found the eerie figure they had captured in the picture now hanging upside down from the roof, its ghastly form swaying gently in the evening breeze.
With a bone-chilling creak, the figure shattered a window, shards of glass cascading to the floor like a deadly rain. Rono and Konane knew they had to hide, to stay out of sight from whatever malevolent presence threatened them.
Konane, always quick-witted, recognized something familiar about the figure. "What - what's that? Why it looks like Eztli," he whispered.
As they frantically searched for a place to hide, Rono dove under a nearby table, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum. Panic rose in their throats as they realized they were trapped, the malevolent presence looming over them.
"What on earth is that monster?" Rono whispered, his voice barely audible over the pounding of their hearts. "We barely were able to hide. We've got to get out of here now!"
Rono's mind raced as he tried to think of a way to escape their impending doom. "I think Konane managed to sneak into that room. Maybe I can hide in there with him if I'm lucky," he thought, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps.
But just as hope began to bloom in his chest, a chilling realization struck them both. The monster was getting closer, its heavy footsteps echoing ominously in the stillness of the night. Rono clenched his fists in terror. "It's goona see me," he thought, his mind a whirlwind of fear and desperation.
Suddenly, a noise shattered the silence. The broom fell with a clatter, and Rono's eyes widened in horror. "Konane, oh no," he gasped, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's going to smash the door in. I've got to think of something."
With a surge of determination, Rono made a split-second decision. He knew that their only chance of survival lay in confronting the monster head-on. "Hey, you creep," he called out, his voice strong despite the fear that gripped him. "Are you looking for something?"
As Konane searched frantically for a weapon, his hand closed around a heavy object. With a fierce cry, he lunged towards the figure, the makeshift weapon held high above his head.
While the witch with a cruel smile, transformed into a Tecolote, the size of a human but with claws as sharp as knives. In a blur of motion, she flew towards Eztli, and grabbed her with her talons, her grip like iron.
Eztli struggled against Tecolote's grasp, her eyes wide with determination. "Let me go," she said. But Tecole only laughed, her voice like the whisper of the wind through dead leaves.
"Well, since you keep asking," Tecolote taunted, her grip tightening on Eztli's trembling form, "it will be easier to carry you once you've broken a few bones.
Eztli was falling.
Eztli's heart pounded in her chest as the ground rushed up to meet her.
Just as she thought she would crash into the unforgiving ground below, a flash of movement caught her eye. Another Tecolote, swooped down with lightning speed, her strong talons reaching out to catch Eztli just in time. With a deft twist of her wings, the Tecolote slowed their descent and gently set Eztli down on the soft ground floor.
