My converse screeched on the linoleum floor as I ran to my first period. I had overslept again because I was kept awake with dreams of Brendon. Sliding into the classroom right as the bell rang, I received a dirty look from my teacher, Dr. Smith. I brushed the look off and went to my desk in the back of the classroom, next to Jack and Alex.
"Late again, Dallon," Alex smirked.
"I came in as the bell was ringing, not after." I just laughed and pulled out my work for the class.
Just as Dr. Smith began his lecture about how time wasn't actually linear and was more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, there was a knock on the door. When the Dr. answered it, it was a particular scruffy haired boy with eyes of melted chocolate. What was Brendon doing here? He didn't have this class or did he. Maybe I just had never noticed him until now. No that didn't make any sense, I would've seen a face like that. He handed Dr. Smith a yellow piece of paper that appeared to be a schedule.
"Oh well Mr. Urie, it appears you will be joining our class now. Please take a seat." Brendon looked at me for just a moment before a flash of horror ran across his eyes. He then went and sat in the opposite corner of the room in the back.
At first, it hurt that he didn't sit next to me, but then I realized he was trying to avoid the suspicion that the two of us were talking. Then I also heard snickers and whispers of the word 'fag' coming from my right. Was Brendon the kid that Jack and Alex always joked about bullying? That was definitely going to cause some issues. If I didn't stop them, Brendon might think I didn't like him, and I wanted to see him hurt. But if I did stop them, it could ruin everything I had worked so hard the past four years to achieve.
My mind was so consumed by anxiety and fear that I had failed to pay attention to the rest of the physics lecture. Before I knew it the bell had rung for us to go to the next class, as I got up to leave, I noticed my two friends get up and head to the back corner of the classroom, towards where Brendon had been sitting.
"Hey Urie, so nice you have class with us now. We don't have to go too far out of our way to see our favorite punching bag." I could hear the laugh in Jack's voice.
"Come on guys, what did the poor kid ever do to you? Just leave him alone." I tried to make it sound like I was laughing, not pleading.
"But Dalpal, he just lets us punch him. He doesn't fight back or anything." Alex laughed, grabbing the collar of Brendon's hoodie and pulling him out of the chair.
"Yea, I think he has a kink for it or something." Jack laughed as he shoved the small boy who somehow appeared even smaller next to the bullies. Brendon didn't even try to resist Jack's push, just stumbled back a couple steps so that he was now leaning against the wall.
"Alright guys that's enough, he's not doing anything because he doesn't want to make a scene. Now get to class." I jokingly shoved the two bullies away from the shaking figure that was backed into the corner. Luckily the two compiled and went to their next class without too many questions.
"I'm so sorry Bren, did they hurt you?" I asked as soon as Jack and Alex were out of sight. Brendon just shook his head, but he was clutching his side, and his breathing was labored.
"Brendon, it looks like you have a broken rib. Can you lift up your shirt so I can see?" He again just shook his head, but for the first time, I could actually read his thoughts. There was fear and pain; something was wrong.
"I-it's been b-broken, Dallon I-I'll be f-fine." His breathing was shallow, and it looked like it hurt, he lifted up the side of his shirt, and I got a glimpse of a dark purple-red bruise.
"Brendon, I think you may have internal bleeding. I need to take you to the doctor." He pulled his shirt back down quickly, his eyes widened, and fear filled them.
