There is nothing more I want than to be able to walk, and play soccer again. But, it's impossible Dr. Callings told me that I am paralyzed, so why does Lincoln think that I can get back in it? All I want is to die.
A knock at the door interrupts my thoughts, and in walks my Doctor. she is holding a clipboard, scanning it thoroughly, she glances up and smiles at me but I don't smile back. For a few minutes there is only silence in the room except for the t.v. Then she clears her throat, " Good new Ms. Mirrers, you can go home tomorrow."
The thought of home sent a thrill through my body, but then I felt sick. My parents would have to build a wheelchair ramp for me to get inside. They would have to change their whole lives because of me, I didn't really want to go home. Dread filled my body, all I could do is nod.
" I'll have the nurses notify your parents, in the mean time , rest up. Tomorrow is gonna be a big day." The Doctor tapped my shoulder, pain flared through me but she failed to notice . " I hope you get better soon, and I will see you at your monthly check ups," she smiles a big fake smile, but I just stare at her. She clicks her tongue, then leaves the room.
...
" Aren't you so excited?" my mom turns around in her seat smiling a huge cheesy grin. I press my lips into a thin line and nod, but really i'm not excited at all, i'm not excited to see the faces of my siblings, and their sympathy. I don't want any of their help, I just want to be left alone.
My dad turns right into the familiar neighborhood that I call home, a bump jars the car making my muscles tense. My mind flashes back to the day of the crash, I remember the blood running down Ryan's face, and her scream. My body shivers, my breathing speeds up, I look around frantically. I needed fresh air fast before I had a panic attack. I gasp for breath, my mom looks at me concerned.
" Whats wrong angel?" she puts her hand on my knee, but I don't feel it. I look up relieved to see that we were pulling into our drive way. I swallow hard, taking a deep breath I unbuckle my seat belt. " Kendall, are you okay?" my mom presses her hand to my for head, I nod and swing open the car door.
At the front door, my whole family is waiting for me, smiles on their faces. Wendall runs down the ramp made specifically for me, followed closely behind Wendall is Bryanna, she squeals and jumps onto the grass running the rest of the way to me.
Wendall grabs my left hand and presses it to his face, he looks at me with mossy green eyes and smile. For the first time in a week my heart feels warm, I smile back and ruffle his curly brown hair with my free hand.
" How are you squirt?" My voice comes out laced with sweetness, there was no way I could be mean to this little boy.
" Me and Bryanna drawed you a picture" Wendall held up a fold wrinkly piece of paper, then took Bryanna's from her and gave it to me.
I unfolded them both, Wendall's was a picture of me in a bed with a sad face. Even though the picture was depressing, I knew that Wendall meant well. I kissed my little brother on the for head and started with Bryanna's.
Her picture was our whole family holding hands in front of our house, each one of us stood smiling happy to be alive. When it got to me, I was sitting down in what was probably a wheel chair, except I didn't look sad. In fact I was holding hands with my older sibling who was Wyatt, and I had the biggest smile on my face since before the crash.
I smiled, and kissed her for head as well, " Love you guys"
" Okay back up, we need to help her into her chair," my dad wheeled around my Wheel chair, dulling the moment a little. The kids backed away, and watched as dad helped me into my wheel chair. I grabbed hold of my wheels, and sighed. I looked at me whole family waiting impatiently at the door, Quinton shoves Clover away so he can see better, but Clover shoves him back. They all watched anxiously. I grind my teeth, this was it, I was about to take Lincoln's offer, I was meant to live.
I take hold of the wheels, ignoring the dull soreness in my arms as I start towards the ramp. My dad offers to help me up the ramp, but I refuse. I wheels around the car, and start up the ramp my siblings wait for me at the top smiles on their faces. I strain to smile back, but it probably came out as a grimace. My arms burn with each turn of the wheel, but I was not trained to give up if Lincoln wanted to help me walk again, I needed show myself that I wasn't weak just because of a small disability.
There was three more feet until the top, I felt like my lungs were on fire. One more push and I had made it, I turn towards the car to see how far it looked from the top. But, someone had caught my attention. Lincoln leaned against his car smiling brightly, our eyes met and it felt like a small shiver of electricity had just ran through my body. I smiled back, and nodded showing him that I wanted his help, and that I wanted to walk and feel my legs again. It didn't seem possible, but his smile grew bigger, and it was even more attractive. He had known what I meant.
...
" okay, so you have until spring to get back on your feet and start playing," Lincoln shifts his gaze from the computer to me, " I have found some strengthening exercises that you can do after you get your feeling back, that it." he smiles and laces his fingers through mine.
" How do we know that we can get the feeling back into my legs?" I ask unsure his plan was going to work. He looks at me like he he was annoyed that I would even say that.
" We have to just get them to wake up, here think of it this way. After you broke your back, you nerves were sent into a deep sleep. If we start to exercise your legs more, then maybe they will wake up, then we will start on walking. and then" Lincoln lifts his hands in the air and wiggles his fingers " Ta Da!!" he says in a sing song voice.
I snort out a laugh covering my mouth, " okay, and what if it doesn't work?" Lincoln looks at me and leans close so that his lips brush mine when he speaks.
" Then it doesn't, and you will still be prefect"
The corner of my lips turn upwards with out permission, and before I know it, I'm smiling uncontrollably. How can the high school player turn into such a sweet gentle loving guy in just a couple of weeks?
Lincoln looks down at my lips, he bites his then looks at me as if asking for permission to kiss me. I don't say anything, I just close the distance letting our lips touch, he snakes his arm around my back pulling his chair closer to mine. Our lips mold together, like kissing is the most natural thing on earth, my whole body felt like it was on fire. Butterflies erupted from the deepest pits of my stomach, and I felt like I was floating on air. I liked this boy, and I really couldn't deny it.
All too soon, Lincoln pulls away. " do you want to go get something to eat?" he grins mischievously, and gets to his feet.
" uh, I don't know if my parents are comfortable with me leaving the house yet." I look at Lincoln, hoping that he got the hint. It was actually me who was uncomfortable with leaving the house.
Luckily I didn't have to say anything else, " ya, I guess that's true huh, okay... I guess we will have lunch at your house. What are you feeling, Pizza, Chinese?"
I shrug, honestly I didn't really care what we ate, as long as it wasn't hospital food. " okay, Chinese it is then" Lincoln flips open his phone and dials a number "Hey, yeah bring it over, okay see ya in a few" he ends the call, and smiles at me, " whats your favorite movie?"
" uhh... probably Malificent" I say with a shy smile.
" Sweet, lets go and watch it" Lincoln jumps up from his chair and grabs the handle to my wheel chair. He pushed me to the stairs that go to my basement. He pauses, of course this would happen. I hadn't thought of how I was going to get down stairs. Then out of no where Lincoln scoops me up gently, he's careful with my back and he starts down the stairs. I wrap my arms around his neck to help him with my dead weight. He stops " just relax"
I smile, this was the best day I had, had in what seemed like forever.
