June 16, 1863
The battle of Vicksburg has been going on for quite some time. General U.S Grant has ordered numerous diversions to confuse the lieutenant on the confederate’s side. On May 22nd the corps of Grants army had assaulted the city but we were not able to take it. That day we had suffered 3,199 deaths and many other injured. I was one of those who were injured. Trying to fight people off I was shot in the abdomen, I have been in the infirmary ever since. Other soldiers have informed me that General Grant has ordered a siege operation. They have drawn a map to show soldiers what the strategies are, yet I cannot seem to understand how to read this map. Either way I have left it in here to record what had been done.
The siege has cut off all supplies going into the city and they feel that the confederates will surrender any moment. I have heard that the siege has affected the confederates deeply, many of the soldiers are dying for disease and starvation and this city residence have been forced to seek underground refuge or caves because of the daily bombardments by Grants forces.
