Evening in the Room

Haseena sat on the bed, her knees drawn to her chest, arms wrapped tightly around them. Her tear-streaked face reflected her helplessness and longing. Every breath felt heavy as her mind wandered back to her home, her mother, and the life she had left behind.

She had tried pleading with Meera earlier, her voice trembling with desperation, but even Meera’s kindness could not break through the invisible chains of control surrounding this palace. As Haseena glanced at the soft hues of the horizon, she thought of Leela Tat—the ghat where she and her friends would gather at this time. It seemed like a distant dream now.

The sound of approaching footsteps broke her reverie. Anubhav entered the room, still dressed in the suit he had worn to the royal court. His sharp gaze immediately landed on the untouched food tray. His eyes then shifted to Haseena, her fragile frame sitting in despair on the bed.

Her tear-stained face struck him like a blade, but his expression remained unreadable as he stepped closer.

“Hamne aapse poocha tha ki aapko kuch aur chahiye,” Anubhav began, his voice low but firm, “lekin yahaan toh nashte ko haath tak nahi lagaya gaya.”

Haseena didn’t look up, her silence a defiance in itself.

“Dekhiye,” he continued, taking another step closer, “Aap yu royiye mat . Yeh aapki halat dekh kar hamara dil—”

“Dil?” Her voice cracked as she finally lifted her face to meet his gaze, her eyes blazing with suppressed anger. “Aapke dil mein thoda sa bhi insaniyat hoti, toh hame yahaan qaid nahi karte.”

Anubhav stiffened, his jaw tightening. “Qaid? Yeh jagah qaid lagti hai aapko?”

“Aapke paas aur kya kehne ko chhoda hai, Rana sa?” she snapped, rising to her feet. “Ham aap se pooch rahe hain, kyun laaye hain humein yahaan? Kyun alag kiya hai humein apne ghar se, apni maa se? Humein wapas jaana hai!”

Her voice trembled with emotion, and for a moment, the weight of her words hung heavily between them.

Anubhav’s expression darkened as he stepped closer, his towering presence making her take an involuntary step back. “Wapas? Kahan wapas?” His voice was low, almost a growl. “Jahan koi bhi aapko hamse door le jaane ki koshish kare? Jahan aap sirf ek sapna ban kar reh jaayein hamare liye?”

Haseena shook her head, tears streaming anew. “Ham kisi ka sapna banne nahi aaye, Rana sa. Ham apni zindagi jeena chahte hain, apne logo ke saath.”

“Lekin ab aap hamari zindagi ka hissa hain,” he said, his tone softening, though his words carried a dangerous edge. “Aur hamara sapna sirf hamara nahi hai, Haseena ji. Woh aapka bhi banega.”

“Hamare sapne hamare apne hote hain,” she retorted, her voice shaking. “Unhe chheen kar sapna nahi banaya jaa sakta, Rana sa.”

Anubhav’s lips curved into a bitter smile. “Sapne chheene nahi jaate, Haseena ji. Kabhi-kabhi sapne bas chhup jate hain kisi ki chhaya ke neeche. Aur woh chhaya... ab se sirf hamari hai.”

The intensity in his words sent a chill down her spine, but she held her ground. “Aap hamari zindagi ke faisle nahi le sakte.”

Anubhav leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Faisle tab liye jaate hain, Priye, jab zindagi kisi ke paas rahti hai. Aur ab se, aapki zindagi sirf hamare paas hai.”

Haseena’s frustration bubbled over. Her voice rose as she shouted, “Aap hamari zindagi ke faisle nahi le sakte! Akhir hote kaun hain aap?”

Anubhav’s expression darkened, and a dangerous glint flashed in his eyes as he stepped closer to her. Haseena instinctively backed away until her back hit the cold wall behind her. She gulped hard, her breaths quickening as he closed the distance between them.

He leaned in, his hands firmly on either side of the wall, trapping her without touching her. His lips brushed close to her ear, his voice dangerously low yet deliberate. “Aapke hone wale pati.”

The words struck her like lightning, leaving her stunned and frozen in place. Her wide, shocked eyes met his as a knowing smirk played on his lips. He backed away slowly, savoring her reaction, his gaze never leaving her face.

“Thodi der mein aayenge... fir aapko le chalenge...” He paused, watching her panic deepen as her mind raced with assumptions. Her breathing grew uneven as she thought he meant to take her for marriage right away.

His smirk widened, clearly enjoying her turmoil, before he finished, “Le chalenge niche... bhojan ke liye.”

With that, he turned and strode out of the room, leaving her clutching her chest, trying to calm the storm of emotions he had unleashed within her. His words echoed in her mind, refusing to let her rest.
