Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the hallway.

"WHAT WAS THAT?"

"Go check it out!" one guard yelled to another.

The guards rushed out, leaving the door slightly open. I could barely breathe, my heart racing. Ae-na crawled out from her hiding spot. "That was way too close," she whispered.

I didn't respond. My mind was spinning as the sound of shouting guards echoed down the hall. They were searching the base like hunters after prey.

"This is really bad," Eun-sae said, peeking through the crack in the door. "They're everywhere."

The metallic click of a gun being cocked echoed faintly, sending a chill down my spine.

"Doesn't matter," I said firmly. "We will keep going. The exit's near."

We went out of the storage room, stepping carefully down the stairs and opened a gate leading to dark hallway where red lights didn't reached anymore.

Finally, we saw a heavy steel door at the end of the hallway and relief flooded my chest, but fear stayed right behind it.

"This is it," I whispered.

With shaking hands, I pushed the key into the lock and turned it. The lock clicked, and I pushed the door open as hard as I could. The cool air outside rushed in as soon as I was about to take any step further.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!"

A gunshot cracked behind me, making me freeze in fear. The bullet whizzed past my arm, so close it left a burning sensation on my skin even when it missed.

"Run!" I yelled, snapping myself out of the momentary shock.

We scattered in all directions, running as fast as we could. The guards' angry shouts echoed behind us. Gunshots boomed, sharp and terrifying, as bullets hit the walls, sending sparks flying.

My chest burned with every breath, my legs screaming for rest, but I kept running. The street was just a few steps away—freedom so close I could almost touch it.
