As the night wore on, the sun, which had ascended with tension, frustration, and the clamor of battle, now descended, taking with it the remnants of conflict.
The usual calm night in the kingdom of Goryeo had arrived. Though it had been merely a few hours, it felt as long as decades.
Each of the royals retreated to their own chambers, bathing and freshening up, while the soldiers rested and the healers tended to their wounds.
The night meal still had to be prepared, as the battle had drawn every single person to Elsiya, except for the soldiers.
The palace, usually bustling with activity, was now a sanctuary of quiet reflection.
The corridors, lit by the soft glow of lanterns, echoed with the distant sounds of the night.
The scent of incense wafted through the air, mingling with the faint aroma of herbs from the healers' quarters.
Emperor Taehyung stood by the window, draped in a black night hanfu that clung to his still-damp hair.
The flickering thoughts in his mind were momentarily soothed by the sight of his bustling kingdom.
It had been hours since the citizens of Goryeo began their return from the war-torn fields of Elsiya.
The battle had raged in desolate lands, sparing the hanok and the empire's grandeur.
The serenity of his homeland, untouched by the ravages of war, brought a rare peace to his heart.
His thoughts wandered back to his grandfather, King Aldric, the betrayer.
The secrets whispered by his late grandfather now made sense—his father, Seokjin, and his twin, Seok-jay, were at the heart of it all.
The revelation weighed heavily on him.
A soft knock on the door pulled him from his reverie. Before he could respond, his beloved Jungkook entered, his presence like a breath of fresh air.
The king's long hair, slightly damp, framed his face, and his baby pink night hanfu looked ethereal in the dim light.
As always, Jungkook's smile was a balm to Taehyung's soul, his presence as vital as air to his lungs.
"Hyung-nim," Jungkook's voice was soft, yet it carried the weight of concern. "You have been standing here for hours. The night is cold, and you should rest."
Taehyung turned to face him, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I find solace in the quiet of the night, Jungkook. It is in these moments that I can reflect on all that has transpired."
Jungkook stepped closer, his eyes filled with understanding. "I know the burdens you carry are heavy, my love. But you do not have to bear them alone. Let me share in your worries, as I share in your joys."
Taehyung reached out, taking his hand in his. "Your presence alone lightens my heart."
Jungkook's smile widened, and he gently squeezed Taehyung's hand. "Then let us face the dawn together, with hope and strength."
Jungkook smiled as Taehyung wrapped his arms around him from behind. The view from the window was breathtaking, the moonlight casting a serene glow over the empire.
The older pressed a soft kiss to the king's neck and closed his eyes. "I apologize for showing you my wrath on the battlefield," he murmured, his voice laden with guilt.
The younger turned to face him, leaning against the window frame, a pout forming on his lips.
"Hyung-nim, you should apologize to Jimin as well. You were really harsh with your sword on us."
