The rain drummed softly against the leaves of the dense forest canopy, creating a rhythmic symphony. Riven sat by the small fire in their makeshift shelter, sharpening his sword. His face was focused, his sharp jawline illuminated by the flickering orange light. Eugene sat nearby, his chin propped on his hands, staring at Riven with a dreamy expression.
Arius had gone out to gather some food, leaving Eugene and Riven alone. The quiet atmosphere seemed perfect for what Eugene had in mind.
Eugene shifted closer to Riven. “You know,” he began in a playful tone, “it’s kind of romantic, being stuck here while the rain falls. Just the two of us.”
Riven didn’t look up. “Hmm.”
Eugene’s brows knitted together. “Hmm? That’s all I get?”
Riven shrugged. “What do you want me to say? The rain’s nice, I guess.”
Eugene leaned in, his voice dropping to a sultry whisper. “I wasn’t talking about the rain, Riven.”
Riven paused mid-sharpen, his hand tightening slightly on the hilt of his sword. “What are you talking about, then?”
Eugene smirked, his wings fluttering lightly. “You, of course. Us. This cozy little setup. Don’t you think it’s the perfect time for... you know... a kiss?”
Riven’s eyes widened slightly, though he kept his gaze on his sword. “We’re hiding from enemies, Eugene. Now’s not the time for... distractions.”
Eugene rolled his eyes, scooting even closer so their knees touched. “Riven, you’ve been sharpening that sword for an hour. I’m starting to think you like it more than me.”
Riven smirked faintly. “The sword doesn’t talk back.”
Eugene gasped dramatically. “Excuse me? I’ll have you know I’m an excellent conversationalist!”
Riven chuckled, finally glancing up at Eugene. “Oh, I know. But I need to stay focused.”
Eugene huffed, crossing his arms. “Fine. If you’re going to keep ignoring me, maybe I’ll just give that kiss to Arius when he gets back.”
Riven froze. His grip on the sword tightened as his jaw clenched. He turned his head slowly to face Eugene, his amber eyes narrowing. “What did you just say?”
Eugene leaned back, feigning nonchalance. “Oh, you heard me. Arius has been very attentive lately. Maybe he’d appreciate my company more than you do.”
Riven’s wings flared slightly, a spark of irritation flashing across his face. “Eugene, you’re not serious.”
Eugene smirked, enjoying Riven’s reaction. “Am I? You’ve been ignoring me all day. Meanwhile, Arius is out in the rain, risking his life to bring us food. Seems like he deserves a little... reward, don’t you think?”
Riven stood abruptly, towering over Eugene. “He’s not getting anything from you. Not a kiss, not a hug, not even a thank you. Got it?”
Eugene tilted his head, pretending to think. “I don’t know... Arius does have a certain charm. And he did say he’d win me over if you kept acting like this.”
Riven groaned, running a hand through his hair. “I can’t believe I’m arguing about this. Eugene, stop messing around.”
Eugene pouted, batting his eyelashes. “But you’re so much more fun when you’re jealous, Riven.”
Riven stared at him for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, with a sudden movement, he leaned down, his face mere inches from Eugene’s. “If you think I’m going to let that pompous prince steal you away, you’ve got another thing coming.”
