The morning sunlight filtered through the room, and Riven slowly opened his eyes, realizing he was still wrapped in a tight embrace. Eugene was nestled against him, arms and legs tangled around Riven like a clingy cat, his face buried against Riven's chest. Riven sighed, glancing at the time-it was way past when he normally got up.
"Eugene, I need to get up," he murmured softly, trying to gently pull himself free from the clingy prince. But as he moved, Eugene's grip only tightened, and a sleepy whine escaped his lips.
"No... stay..." Eugene muttered, his voice muffled as he snuggled even closer, pulling Riven's arm back around him. "You're not allowed to leave..."
Riven chuckled, amused. "Eugene, I have things to do. You can't just keep me here forever."
"But I can," Eugene said, his eyes still closed, a small smirk playing on his lips. "I'm a crown prince, remember? I command you to stay."
"Oh, so now you're using your royal powers?" Riven asked, raising an eyebrow. "What happened to you saying I was your 'boyfriend' and not just your bodyguard?"
Eugene cracked one eye open, giving Riven a playful look. "Boyfriend, bodyguard... same thing, right? Both mean you stay with me."
Riven laughed, shaking his head. "That's not how it works. I have to eat breakfast and-"
"Then I'll starve too," Eugene declared dramatically, holding onto him even tighter. "See? Now you can't leave, or I'll waste away here alone."
Riven rolled his eyes, exasperated but amused. "You are impossible, you know that?"
"Impossible to resist," Eugene corrected, pouting. "Come on, just a few more minutes. You're warm. The bed's finally cozy enough with you in it."
Riven sighed, clearly not winning this battle anytime soon. "You're not going to let go, are you?"
"Never," Eugene said stubbornly, his grip tightening as he buried his face into Riven's chest again, his tone dropping to a quiet, almost shy murmur. "You kept the nightmares away..."
Riven's face softened, and he patted Eugene's back gently. "Alright, alright... but only for a few more minutes."
Eugene smiled triumphantly, snuggling even closer, a satisfied hum escaping him. "See? Being the crown prince has its perks."
Riven shook his head with a chuckle, muttering, "Completely spoiled, that's what you are..."
Eugene just grinned, his eyes closed, perfectly content in his victory as he kept Riven right where he wanted him.
There was a sudden, insistent knock at the door. Eugene's face twisted into a frown as Riven finally managed to disentangle himself from Eugene's stubborn hold.
"Stay right there," Riven chuckled, lightly poking Eugene's nose before he flew to answer the door.
Standing there was a messenger fairy-a wiry, nosy character who worked as a sort of postman for the colony. His sharp eyes darted around, immediately landing on Eugene lounging on the bed.
"Oh-ho! Are you two lovebirds having a honeymoon celebration already?" the messenger teased with a knowing grin. "Looks like the crown prince is getting quite cozy here. The bed warm enough for him, Riven?"
Riven's expression darkened, and he scowled. "Just give me the message, and stop peeking inside. This isn't any of your business."
The messenger shrugged, unfazed, but extended a rolled leaf sealed with a bright royal stamp. The emblem of the fairy king gleamed on it. "Well, here you go. Important letter straight from the top. You better read it carefully."
