We lay together on the couch, the room thick with tension as we waited for Cassi's parents to return. Cassi, burning with fever, lay curled up in Sabrina's arms, her frail body trembling as Sabrina whispered soothing words into her hair.
Taylor paced the room like a caged animal, her footsteps echoing with unease as she anxiously awaited news.
Blake was already on her way to the hospital, determined to get answers. Travis, who had initially come to visit me, stayed behind, doing everything he could to help me calm Taylor, though her worry seemed unshakable.
The air felt heavy, every second dragging as we clung to the hope that relief-or at least answers-was on its way.
The door opened and Blake came inside. We all looked at her. "Tell us!" Taylor said with an harsh undertone. Blake shook her head, then a tear left her eye. "They didn't make it", Blake whispered. Taylors eyes widened and she looked at the sleeping girl.
"What do we do know?" Gracie asked. "We're gonna keep her here. Maybe she has family", Taylor said before placing herself next to Sabrina, to caress Cassi's hair.
"We let her sleep", Taylor mumbled. We sat there in silence waiting for her to wake up, I also fell asleep as I layed on top of Taylor. After a couple hours I woke up in Travis' arms. We were laying in Taylors and my bed.
"Did they told her?" I mumbled tired. "Yes." He responded. Slowly I got up, before rubbing my eyes. "How are you?" He asked me with a soft tone. "Where's Taylor?" I mumbled. "With Cass and the others", he responded. I gave him a nood before slowly standing up. We walked back into the living room and there she was, talking to a police officer.
There was also a woman who was talking to Cassi. "What going on?" Travis asked. The police officer gulped as he saw Travis. "They want to take her", Taylor mumbled sad. "What no", I nearly yelled. "She still has family, so we need to bring her there", the officer explained. "She will live with her aunt in Orlando", my eyes widened and I could see Taylors expressions dropping. Blake, Sabrina and Gracie stood there, death glaring him.
"Cassi, say goodbye to your friends," he said softly, his voice heavy with an unspoken weight. The little girl turned to us, her lips trembling, and murmured a quiet goodbye. Then, it was her turn to face Taylor. I could see it in their eyes-this was going to break them both.
Taylor knelt down, her face just inches from Cassi's, trying to muster the strength to smile.
"Will I ever see you again, Taylor?" Cassi's voice cracked as she spoke, her wide, tear-filled eyes searching desperately for an answer, for hope. Taylor's lips parted, but no words came out at first. She swallowed hard, her whole body shaking as she struggled to keep the tears at bay. Finally, she whispered, "I don't know, sweet girl. I don't know."
Her hands trembled as she reached up to her neck and unclasped the necklace she always wore-the one Cassi had once admired so much. Gently, she draped it around the girl's small shoulders, her fingers brushing against Cassi's damp skin.
"This is for you," Taylor said, her voice barely audible. She grabbed a piece of paper with shaking hands, scribbling something on it. "Here's my number," she added, pressing it into Cassi's palm. "And my necklace... so you'll always have something to remind you of me. No matter where we are, you'll have this."
Cassi clutched the necklace and paper to her chest as tears spilled freely down her cheeks. Her sobs grew louder, wracking her tiny frame. Taylor leaned in, pulling her into a tight embrace, and for a long moment, they just held each other. Taylor's fingers moved gently across Cassi's face, wiping away the tears, though her own fell silently, dripping into Cassi's hair.
