Briar's POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've been trying to get up and leave this awful room for God knows how long, only to find the best I can do is move my foot. I need to get out of here, it's all too much. The wedding, the poisoning, just me being in this room is overwhelming. The door creaked open so I quickly pretended to be asleep. Footsteps shuffled closer towards me and the bed dipped as someone, Adrian I assume, climbed in next to me.
I felt him move closer towards me, his breath on my face close enough to kiss me; but instead he seemed to hesitate. I held my breath as he moved away and flicked off the lights, settling under the sheets so close our legs brushed each other. After he began to snore I found myself letting out a breath, of relief? Disappointment? No, I didn't want him to kiss me anyway. But why would he, I'm asleep, I wouldn't have known, it wouldn't benefit his act. I stiffened as Adrian turned towards me and wrapped his arms around me.
I glanced over at him. I've never seen him sleep before; his lips were parted slightly, his eyes shut and still, his whole demeanor was very relaxed overall. In the four years I've been here I have never seen him so look so peaceful, but then again whenever I've seen him he's been awake.
I glanced around the pitch black room, which began to feel smaller and darker the more I looked at it. I heard footsteps in the distance. My heart started pounding in my chest so loud I'm surprised Adrian is still asleep. I couldn't breathe and the darkness began to choke me.
"Adrian?" I whispered.
Panic began to grip me as my breathing quickened and I heard whispers outside the door.
"Adrian?" I croaked.
The door began to open, and I couldn't move.
"Adrian!" I screamed. He jumped awake and flipped on the lights, standing in a fighting stance with a dazed look on his face as he quickly looked around.
"What? Whats wrong?" He looked at me.
"Nightmare?" I shook my head.
"No, I just, I heard someone, and it's dark, and I just, someone was coming in, I don't, I don't know." I said breathlessly. He cautiously moved toward the door and opened it as he stepped out into the hallway and disappeared from my sight. I tried to stay calm until he came back into the room.
"No one is out there, everyones asleep." He stated. I looked warily at him for a moment.
"Someone was there. I know it." I insisted, Adrian sighed.
"No one was there Briar, you imagined it." I wanted to scream at him.
"No! I didn't! He was there, I know it!" He studied me carefully.
"He?" My throat went dry.
"Someone, I meant someone." I looked away as Adrian stared at me, his eyes probably holding a question, but he didn't ask if they did.
"It's probably a side effect from the poison, you should sleep." He moved to turn out the light and I tensed at the movement, causing him to pause and rethink.
"I think i'll leave the lights on, just in case." He decided. I nodded as he climbed back into bed. I barely even acknowledged that he had his arm around me and was tracing circles on my side as I drifted off. I didn't have a nightmare that night, but I had a feeling I would soon be living in one.
