Marcus' point of view
Celeste was alone in the living room, staring at an old magic book she'd borrowed from her father. Marcus knew she wasn't supposed to be practising magic unsupervised, but... was pretty sure the request was coming.
Marcus?' she asked innocently as he walked past her.
—'Yes? There you go.
— Can I try a little spell? I promise, it's not dangerous, you can keep an eye on it... And you won't tell Mum and Dad?
Marcus looked at her with amusement, crossing his arms.
— Hmm... And why would I do that?
Céleste gave him an irresistible smile.
— Because I'm cute and you're the best.
The vampire burst out laughing.
— Oh, flattering. All right, then. He's sitting down, what do you want to do? I'll keep an eye on him. There's no way it's going to get dangerous.
Céleste opened the book, muttered an incantation, and a luminous butterfly appeared in the air. She jumped for joy.
— Can you see? I'm brilliant!
Marcus smiled, impressed.
— Congratulations .
She stopped, thoughtful, before looking up at him.
— Marcus, why don't you have any children?
The question caught Marcus off guard. He sat down beside her, thinking.
— Because I can't. But you know, I've got kids in my life, like you and Margaret and the twins. I don't need to have biological children.
— You like kids .
— Yes, with a laugh. I don't need biological children to enjoy life. You'll understand better when you're grown up.
— You could adopt. Céleste smiled mischievously.
— Why do you want this idea so badly?
— To have another child to play with.
— It's not something you should me ask for. You should just ask your parents for a little brother or sister. He laughed, not seriously.
Céleste's eyes sparkled with mischief.
— Yes!
Marcus froze. Oh no! She would have come up with the idea on her own, yes.
— He laughed, it's their choice and he swallowed, don't tell them I gave you the idea.
— promise .
In the evening, they would meet for dinner, Phoebe joining them. Even though he shouldn't have, he'd helped her think about proposing. She wanted to do it tonight, in front of everyone. He knew that the idea was not foreign or rejected, but this proposal was going to be adorable for him and less so for Camille and Andrew.
The sun was setting, as Marcus helped Celeste set the table. She was concentrating, eyebrows furrowed, carefully placing each place setting. Phoebe, a mocking smile on her lips, watched from the corner of the room.
— Are you sure you want to do this tonight? whispered Marcus to the little girl as he adjusted a plate.
— Yes,' she replied firmly, her tone full of determination.
