Andrew had no choice. He had put it off as long as possible, clinging to the illusion that he could maintain the fragile balance of his life. But the weight of secrets made him want to vomit.

He should have left before. Forced himself to walk away. That would have hurt Camille less.

But he'd stayed. Because he couldn't help it. Because she lit up his world in a way he hadn't anticipated. Because he wanted to believe, at least for a moment, that he could have a normal life with her.

Except that normal definitely eluded him.

He was going to hurt her. He was going to break everything.

The doorbell rang and his heart sank. Camille was there.

Andrew rose to his feet, summoning up all his courage. Every step to the door seemed insurmountable. He would have liked to turn back the clock, to cling a little longer to the illusion that all was well.

But it was too late.

When they were settled, he forced himself to stop gesticulating, well aware that his agitation betrayed his state of mind. Camille, facing him, already looked sad, as if she sensed that something was about to turn her world upside down.

He cleared his throat.

- Camille, I think... not think... you're pregnant.

The words tumbled through the air like a stone in water. Heavy, shattering the surface of their reality.

Camille froze, her eyes widening in shock.

- It's not funny, Andrew," she murmured, her voice trembling.

He looked away, unable to bear the incredulity in her eyes.

- I'm serious," he replied, unable to keep his fingers from nervously fidgeting with the edge of his sweater. I've got tests to check.

He quickly rummaged in a bag, pulling out a box.

Camille shook her head, confusion giving way to a hint of annoyance.

- Andrew, I'm on the pill.

- Please do the test," he insisted, his throat tightening. I can feel it.

She huffed, crossing her arms, clearly annoyed by his insistence.

- If it makes you feel any better, it'll be negative. Believe me," she added, rising to her feet.

He watched her walk away, the urge to end it all there burning in his throat. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. But he couldn't go back. Not after having come this far.

Time seemed to stretch painfully when she returned, test still in hand. She sat up slowly, obviously in shock.

- You... yes, you're right," she breathed, distantly.

Andrew took a deep breath. His heart was beating at an alarming rate.

- There's more to it than that, Camille. Please, sit down.

She was already sitting down, but he wanted to make sure she didn't run off before he'd said everything. He gave her a few seconds before continuing.

- I've hidden something important from you.

She looked up at him, still numb from the baby news.

- What?

How could she tell him? How to explain the inexplicable?

- I'm... a wizard.

The silence that followed was deafening. Camille stared at him, trying to figure out if he was joking. He saw her eyes scrutinize him, as if trying to detect some sign of madness.
