I need save right now, can you hear me calling out?
By Munm
Camille had noticed that something was wrong with Marcus since the start of their shift. He seemed nervous, and this was clearly affecting his work. Usually focused, he had made several unexpected mistakes: he had switched patient files around, and his attention seemed to be constantly elsewhere. Whenever she asked him questions, he answered evasively, as if he was trying to hide something. Camille quickly realised that he didn't feel like opening up, so she didn't insist, even though his behaviour was disturbing her.
At the end of their shift, as they were getting ready to leave, Marcus turned to her, looking even more uncomfortable than usual.
— Would you like to come over to my house tonight? He offered, his voice betraying an unusual nervousness.
Before she could reply, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from Andrew: Can you come over to mine tonight? We need to talk, it's important.
A shiver of apprehension ran through her. This kind of message did not bode well. Her mind raced, imagining the worst scenarios. Something was wrong, she could feel it, and it terrified her. She was almost certain that she would end up crying today, she was already anticipating the pain.
— I'm sorry, she said. She swallowed. Andrew needs to really talk to me and... she couldn't say the rest.
— Andrew, definitely, he replied, after the surprise had passed.
It wasn't right, but...
— Another time, I promise, or afterwards when...
He smiled, but forced:
— Andrew first.
She nodded, already absorbed in what lay ahead with Andrew. When she arrived at his house, she felt even more nervous. He opened the door, his face pale and almost as anxious as hers. Camille slowly took off her coat and sat down, her stomach in knots. Everything about behaviour seemed to confirm what she had feared: this was the end between them. The weight of this assumption paralysed her. She didn't know exactly how she felt, but she liked him.
Andrew broke the silence by looking her straight in the eye.
— Camille, I think... you're pregnant.
The words fell like a stone through the air. Camille was speechless, unable to believe that he could be joking about such a serious subject.
— It's not funny, Andrew,' she murmured, a mixture of anger and confusion in her voice.
— I'm serious, he replied, fidgeting. I've got tests to check.
— Camille shook her head: Andrew, I'm on the pill.
— Please do the test, he insisted, hesitating. I can feel it.
A nervous smile appeared on the face, but it quickly faded.
— If it makes you feel any better, it'll be negative, believe me, she added, without much conviction.
She reluctantly took the test, convinced that it was a waste of time. Of course, she knew that the pill wasn't 100% effective, but there was no way she could be pregnant. And yet... two bars appeared on the test.
Positive.
Camille froze, unable to comprehend what she was seeing. Pregnant. No, it wasn't possible. She couldn't... How could he have known before she did? Her thoughts became muddled. This wasn't supposed to happen, but... she'd always known that she wanted... She came out of the bathroom, swallowing hard, still in shock.
