Jules' eyes widened as the Russians maneuvered toward the controls of the gate. The humming sound of energy grew louder, reverberating through the room, and a sickly blue glow illuminated the space. A pit formed in her stomach as realization struck. She turned to Steve and Dustin, the three of them exchanging a look of sheer dread.
"The gate," Jules whispered, her voice barely audible, as though saying it out loud might make the nightmare real.
Steve's jaw tightened, and without another word, the group moved quickly back down the stairs. Erica took the lead, moving with confidence and urgency, but the tension in the air was thick. As they descended, Robin, clearly rattled, couldn't stay quiet any longer.
"I don't understand," Robin started, her tone sharp and demanding. Her wide eyes flicked between Jules, Steve, and Dustin. "You've seen this before?"
Jules didn't respond immediately, her face pale and distant. Steve, sensing her hesitation, stepped in. "Not exactly," he answered curtly.
Robin wasn't satisfied. "Then what, exactly?" she pressed, her frustration growing.
Jules finally met Robin's gaze, her eyes dark and serious. "You guys are all in grave danger," she said bluntly.
Robin stared at her, her confusion giving way to disbelief. "What? More than the fact that Russians are secretly working under Hawkins Mall?"
Jules nodded grimly. Her voice was eerily calm, but her words carried a weight that made everyone freeze. "It's worse. Way worse."
Robin blinked, caught off guard. "How much worse?" she asked cautiously.
"It's really bad," Dustin interjected, his voice trembling. "Like, end of the human race as we know it kind of bad."
Robin's gaze darted between the three of them, her skepticism giving way to alarm. "And you three know about this how?"
Jules hesitated, the weight of her past threatening to crush her. Finally, she muttered, "I'm from the lab."
Robin froze, her confusion deepening, but before she could respond, Erica, who had been silently observing, cut in sharply.
"Um, Steve? Where's your Russian friend?"
All heads whipped around to the spot where the unconscious Russian guard had been. It was empty.
"Shit," Steve muttered under his breath.
