"𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲," 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝, 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝. "Stay."
"You're drunk," Evan said, an unreadable expression on his face.
"You're high."
She watched as an annoyed frown broke onto his face. "Amara, don't—"
"Just listen," Amara said, tugging his hand again. "Please."
He looked up, sighed, and turned back to face her. "Don't do or say something you'll regret." He decided not to add that he only asked she do that because if she did anything, he sure as hell wasn't going to stop her.
"You have five minutes," he warned, stepping closer to her, nearly pinning her against the balcony.
"I don't know how to say this," Amara began, subconsciously picking at her fingernail.
Evan looked down at it, but said nothing. His eyes flicked back up to hers. "Just say it."
She bit her bottom lip, nervous.
"C'mon, doll," he said, taking another step towards her. His body was so close to hers he could nearly feel the pull, as if she were drawing him in. "I may not like what you stand for, but we know better than to pretend we hate each other at this point."
Amara shook her head. Her eyes were glassy.
"I know it's not just me," he said carefully. "I'm not saying we have to like each other. But...aren't you tired?"
"It's not just you," she said. "The truth is, I'm scared."
"Scared?"
And then her big, pretty eyes latched onto his, and Evan could feel his breath catching.
"What if..."
"Say it, doll."
She broke skin on her finger. Blood seeped from the nail.
Evan took it, slowly bringing it up to wipe it on his new suit. He didn't care about his suit, anyways. He could hear his subconscious screaming about the filth of Muggle blood, the muddy, tainted concoction of generations of mistreatment and misconception.
He took her hand, massaging it gently in his. "Say it."
"What if I fall in love with you?"
Oh.
Evan's hands were burning. "Amara—"
"For the record, I'm not in love with you. But...look at us, even now. I can't...you can't treat me like this and expect me not to. You're...you're going to hurt me."
"You've been hurting me," Evan muttered, looking down.
"I'm sorry?"
"Don't get me wrong," he said, as her cool fingers lifted his chin to look her in the eye, "I know what we are. I'm not asking for more. But knowing that I alone get to see the most personal parts of you...it leaves someone wondering."
Amara frowned, but said nothing, inviting him to elaborate.
He conceded. "But I can't have you. I can't even tolerate the thought. It's ridiculous. People like you and people like me do not last."
"Horrible pairing."
Evan ran a strand of her hair though his fingers, watching it flow. "It's funny."
"What's funny?"
"I don't hate you anymore," he said eventually. "Even though you...you hurt me and tortured me and made me betray my friends. You make me lie, and pretend, and abandon who I am and who I will be. Even if it's just for a moment."
Amara wasn't sure what to say.
"You don't have to tell me you feel the same," he said, looking carefully at her, "and you don't have to treat me differently. We have to understand that this...thing, is temporary."
"If you become a Death Eater," Amara said, "we have to stop. I mean it."
"When."
"If," she said, fire blazing in her eyes. "You don't have to."
"I want to," he said sadly. "And I will, when I go home for the holidays."
"So soon? You're still in school."
He gave a small shake of his head, as if shaking of some irrelevant fly. "I'm an adult."
She shook her head, clearly fighting back things she wanted to say.
"I need to make something clear with you," Evan said seriously. "I know exactly what I'm doing. You've always known who I am. Don't let...this...affect how you see me. I am the same person as I was when you hated me."
"Hate."
"Hated," Evan corrected, a challenging look in his eye. "Don't lie to me, doll." His tone was firm, but there was a desperate plea in his face, in the way he was staring at her, observing even the smallest, slightest reactions.
"Don't you want me to hate you?"
He looked at her, conflict written all over his face. "No, I don't think I do."
