The air carried a stillness, broken only by the faint hum of hospital equipment. Anu and Giri sat side by side, their fingers intertwined, waiting for their turn in the scanning room. The silence felt heavy, laced with questions neither dared to voice. Anu's heart pounded beneath her uncertainty, while Giri's steady hand masked his own hidden tremors.
The nurse finally called them in. The room was cool and clinical, the dim lighting casting soft shadows across the walls. Anu climbed onto the table, her breath shallow as the gel met her skin with an icy touch. Giri stood beside her, his eyes fixed on the monitor—its black-and-white haze both mysterious and terrifying.
The technician's movements were precise, the probe gliding methodically, chasing answers within the screen's shifting shadows. And then—a sudden, rhythmic sound, soft but unmistakable.
A heartbeat.
The technician paused briefly, a flicker of surprise in her expression. "The doctor will explain shortly," she said with a small, knowing smile.
They returned to the consultation room, a fragile hope fluttering between them.
Moments later, the doctor entered, her expression warm, tinged with wonder. "Anu, Giri," she began, "we've discovered something unexpected. The scan shows a small gestational sac... and a well-developed heartbeat. You're about six weeks pregnant."
Anu's breath hitched, her wide eyes searching Giri's. His hand tightened around hers, his silence speaking volumes.
"Did you take a pregnancy test recently?" the doctor asked gently.
Both shook their heads, stunned by the revelation.
The doctor's smile softened. "With your irregular cycles, it's understandable you didn't realize. But this... this is wonderful news." Giri and Anu sat still, their emotions locked behind a wall of silence. They listened as the doctor explained the next steps, recommending additional tests and urging Anu to avoid stress, having noticed fluctuations in her blood pressure. The doctor offered detailed instructions, which they absorbed without a word, their voices lost somewhere between disbelief and uncertainty. Yet, through it all, Giri's hand remained firmly around Anu's—a silent promise that he was with her, no matter what.
By evening, with the tests completed and a list of prescribed medications in hand, they returned home.
The house felt eerily quiet, heavy with unspoken thoughts. Anu moved through the familiar space mechanically, her body following routine while her heart drifted elsewhere. Without a word to Giri, Anu entered their room and sank onto the bed, her back resting against the headboard. She placed both hands on her belly, feeling the life within her—the baby she had prayed for through six long years of heartbreak and hope. This child, her child, had come to her when she was at her breaking point. The precious presence within her, known for only a few weeks, had arrived in her life at the most unexpected moment. She sat there, still and uncertain, her heart heavy with a tangle of emotions.
Giri stood frozen at the doorway, his eyes fixed on her. His chest tightened as he watched Anu, her hands protectively cradling their unborn child. Words failed him—words of joy, apology, and love. He felt the sting of regret for his impulse to run from reality, from the crushing fear that had gripped him, unaware that their greatest hope had already taken root within her. Now, joy and guilt collided within him, leaving him motionless, struggling to find the courage to step forward.
The silence between them grew, thick and weighty, yet it spoke more than any words could. It carried their pain, their longing, and their love. Slowly, Giri's feet moved, drawing him into the room. He lowered himself beside her on the bed, his hand trembling as it covered hers on her belly.
