Chapter Forty Eight - No Can Do
Garrett answered the door with a bright smile like he already knew it was me behind it. "Rebekah!"
"Hi, Garrett," I greeted while stepping inside as he cleared the way for me and then gently closed the door behind me. "How are you?"
"I'm good. How are you?"
"Just getting by." I shrugged, making him let out a laugh as I did a quick scan of the stairs. "Is Matt back from the gym ye—"
The sound of a lock clicking open behind me made me spin around just as Matt walked in through the door. His eyes landed on me while mine widened a little like I'd seen a ghost. I had come to his house expecting to see him, so why was I so surprised when I actually did?
His eyes turned cold at the sight of me, and I felt a pang in my chest. As both of us remained silent, I felt the unspoken tension between us rise.
"I'll be on my way," Garrett muttered behind me, probably reading the room. Soon, I could hear his retreating footsteps.
I bit down on my lip before offering Matt a nervous, "Hey!"
"Hey!" he replied dryly as he walked past me while pulling his water bottle out of his gym bag and chugging the liquid in large gulps. When he unzipped his black hoodie and tossed it on the couch, I got a sight of his gray t-shirt, which was drenched in sweat. And judging by his insanely pumped arm muscles, I could tell he'd just had a very intense workout.
As I stood there watching him, I realized he hadn't invited me in yet. Was there a chance he hadn't intended to see me today and hoped that I wouldn't show up?
Well, this is embarrassing, I thought as I debated between saying something else or just leaving.
"You can wait in the music room. I'll be done with my shower in five."
His words reassured me and made me flinch at the same time. In the music room. Not in his bedroom like we'd gotten used to.
But as the images from last night started flashing in my head, I didn't blame him. In fact, I didn't think I could handle being in his room without recalling the embarrassment from the kiss.
"Okay." I walked past him to make my way to his music room. I hadn't been in there in a while and realized that if I hadn't made that stupid move to kiss him, we'd be up in his room right now, talking about random stuff while munching on something, most probably a pizza.
There were only two reasons why I regretted doing what I did. First, I had a boyfriend. Second, Matt's reaction. But despite all that, even if I could take the kiss back, I wouldn't.
I flopped down in the chair with a sigh, too busy moping to notice when Cheeto dashed inside the room until he started to aggressively nibble on my shoes like he was on Catnip.
"Aw, I've missed you too." I pulled him up to my lap and stroked his fur. He was turning into a big boy now.
"You don't scratch anymore, do you?"
When I rubbed his ears, he closed his eyes halfway and purred loudly, making me chuckle. "Where's your mom? And your siblings?"
I usually lost track of time while playing with Cheeto, and the serotonin boost he gave me every time he did something adorable was just phenomenal. I could give my life for that cat. I loved him so much.
Thanks to the little furball, I had forgotten all about the awkwardness from earlier until I caught a movement in my peripheral vision.
My eyes lifted to find Matt entering the room. His hair was slightly wet from the shower and messy like he'd just aggressively towel dried it and pushed it back before walking in. He was in a pair of white sweatpants and a black t-shirt, which made his muscles look even better.
