Chapter Sixty Three - This Is

"Seriously?" Blake raised a brow at my prom date sitting in the living room.

"Yes," I confirmed.

"I thought you'd be going with Sean. Did he not ask you?"

"Nah, not really. I doubt he's even going with that broken leg of his."

"Right." He nodded, pointing with his chin to the guy who was nervously seated on our living room couch after the interrogation Blake had just had with him. "What did you say his name was again?"

I rolled my eyes and gave myself a final look in the mirror. I'd curled my hair and ran a comb through it to give a wavy texture, then I'd styled it back in a half updo. It was a braided loop hairstyle I'd learnt from YouTube. My makeup was light and subtle to accentuate my sleek light pink gown. It was a plunging neck design, but not too deep.

"Ready to go?" I stepped into the living room with a smile.

"Yes, please," he answered with wide eyes, gaze shifting back to my brother, who'd just walked in after me. "Oh, and you look beautiful, Becks."

"Thank you, Chris. You look really handsome yourself."

"Let's go?" He held his arm out for me, his nervous eyes adding a little please with that.

I chuckled lowly.

"And what time do you get her home, Chris?" Blake asked just as we'd made it to the front door.

"9 p.m., sharp," Chris quavered.

"Good. I'll see you at 9, Becks. Sharp."

Nick was watching it all from the couch, amused. He'd been the one keeping poor Chris company while Blake was unnerving him. Or at least that's what I'd thought Nick was doing until I'd overheard him telling Chris what Blake had done to one of my dates in the past—shoved a dozen fiery fingers treat down his throat for looking at me the wrong way. Lies. All lies. Nothing of the sort had ever happened.

With a sigh, I left my house.

"I totally get why Matt asked me to pick you up for him. Your brother's really scary. But who would've thought he'd be scary enough to scare that well-built quarterback?" he joked while getting the passenger door for me.

"That's not what happened." I chuckled. "It's a bit more complicated. But thanks for doing this, Chris."

"It's fine." He shrugged. "I pick up his date. He picks up mine. We're even."

I frowned as he got into the car. "I didn't know that arrangement."

"Well, obviously. Who was gonna pick Rebecca then?"

My eyes widened. "Your date is Rebecca?"

"Don't judge me. She asked me, and I didn't wanna say no. What if I hadn't found someone else?"

"That's not what I meant." I stared out of my window, scowling at the thought of Matt being with her in that moment. I bet she would've made up a hundred scenarios in her head on the short drive to the school.

What if she was trying to hit on him again? Who was I kidding? Of course she was.

I was suddenly a little restless to reach school now.

When we made it, I found his car parked up ahead, and he was standing outside, leaning against it. He was looking so hot in that tuxedo with his hands buried in his pockets. To my annoyance, Rebecca was standing right beside him and talking, which Matt wasn't even acknowledging as he stared ahead into distance.
