Chapter Fifty Seven - A Storm Coming

"So, did you like the car, Becks?" Mom asked over dinner.

"I love it, mom. Thank you so much. I still can't believe you guys got me that beautiful car."

"Of course we had to get you one, sweetie." She squished my cheeks, smiling. "We got Blake his first car too when he turned sixteen. Just be responsible like him, and you won't have the keys taken away from you."

"I will be." I nodded with excitement, cutting a glance at Blake. "Blake's gonna give me driving lessons on his car."

He smiled sarcastically.

"That's great." Mom resumed her dinner, then after a moment, she spoke again, "Rebekah, I haven't asked you in a while, but how's music coming up?"

Oh no!

"Music?" Blake blinked.

I bit down on my lip. "It's coming up great. Yeah, I decided to take up a hobby, Blake. Mom, how was work today?"

She nodded. "It was okay."

"And you didn't tell me, Becks? Wow," Blake scoffed. And here I thought I'd successfully closed that topic. "I feel so betrayed right now. I tell you everything...that you should know."

"It wasn't that big of a deal." I shrugged.

"Rebekah?" Mom frowned. "Even that's not a big deal for you? Do you take anything seriously?"

Dad cleared his throat, raising a brow at her.

"I mean, this is a big deal," she continued defensively. "She could get to perform at that huge event if she wins that competition."

"What event? What competition?" Blake looked completely baffled.

"Just some competition she was telling us about. If she wins that, she's going to perform at this music event that'll be amazing for her college application," she explained.

If I hear the words 'college' and 'application' from her mouth one more time, I'm going to lose my mind.

Blake's mouth fell open in surprise as he threw me a betrayed look. "How come you didn't tell me about any of this? I didn't even know you could sing."

"I-I wanted to surprise you."

"What? Really? You should've told me that." Mom shook her head. "I wouldn't have brought it up in front of him. I'm sorry."

"It's fine, mom." With a nervous smile, I looked down at my food and resumed eating. Blake still seemed a little taken aback but started eating anyway.

"Music reminds me, did you ask Matt for help? I haven't seen him show up here in a few days. Does he not come over anymore?"

I choked on my food, and dad immediately fetched me a glass of water, rubbing my back as he asked, "Are you okay?"

I took my own sweet time to sip it while feeling my brother's eyes on me. The longer I took, the longer I could avoid the daggers he was glaring my way.

"Are you okay, Becks?" Dad asked again.

I nodded, exhaling as I set the glass down, feeling each second of Blake's curious eyes on me.

"No, I didn't really ask for his help. I'm doing okay by myself," I answered while staring at my plate.

There was silence again, and I thought the conversation was over, so I started to eat, but my fork stopped mid-air when someone spoke up.
