Ashton had received the call 6 days ago. On a Sunday. He was at home waiting on Luke so they could work out a couple last minute wedding details. At this point, Luke was already an hour late. He was supposed to be getting his last fitting for the wedding which was supposed to have ended two hours earlier. Luke hadn't replied to any of Ashton's calls or texts.
Until, at 7:00pm, Ashton received the call.
The caller ID said Luke. Ashton answered fully prepared to bombard him with questions when someone who was clearly not Luke, spoke.
"Ashton Irwin?"
"Yes? And you are?"
At this moment, Ashton knew something was very wrong. His thoughts were confirmed when a nurse was calling to inform him Luke had been in a car accident. He had been t-boned by a person who was not paying any attention and ran a red light. Luke was in surgery but the odds were not looking well.
Ashton had never ran so fast. He tore his way out of his apartment and into his car. He sped to the hospital and ran up to the desk. He was sent to the waiting room. He sat there for three hours at which point Luke's parents and brothers had shown up an hour after Ashton, Michael showed up but then had to leave after an hour, and Ashton's mum showed up who also couldn't stay. Soon, it was just the five of them.
180 minutes Ashton sat in that waiting room. He didn't eat or drink a thing. He didn't speak to anyone. He stared straight ahead too afraid to even think. But 180 minutes later, a surgeon walked into the waiting room. Ashton noticed the blood. He tried so hard not to think about where it had come from and who's it was. He waited for what seemed like hours for the surgeon to speak.
The news they received was this: Luke had some serious brain damage and internal bleeding. They had finished the surgery and Luke was now in the ICU. They weren't sure he would make it through the night but there was a very small chance. They were all given permission to go see him for a couple minutes. Liz and Andy went first. Then Ben and Jack. Then, finally, Ashton.
Ashton was scared to go in. He was scared to see Luke in the condition he was in but he knew he had to do it. He stepped inside and upon seeing Luke, his heart broke for the first of many times.
His normally clean and nicely styled blonde hair was a mess with a little blood that had been in no effort tried to be cleaned. There were multiple tubes inside of him and he was hooked up to a couple machines.
Ashton felt tears spring to his eyes at the sight of his fiancé so damaged. He took a seat next to the boy and grabbed his pale, limp hand in his.
"Oh Luke." He whispered so sadly. "What's happened to you baby?"
That was one of the last things Ashton had ever said to Luke before he was told he had to leave. He nodded at the clearly tired and annoyed nurse before gently kissing all of Luke's white knuckles and mumbling a sad "I love you so much baby. Please pull through this. I need you so bad."
That night Ashton and Liz were the only ones who spent the night in those uncomfortable plastic hospital chairs. When they woke up, the rest of the family was there with coffee.
They didn't have to wait much longer when a doctor stepped into the waiting room with an apologetic look on his face.
Ashton knew the news he was about to receive and his heart stopped before he could even hear it.
"I am so sorry," Ashton tuned out the rest. He couldn't bare to hear the rest. Instead, his face paled and he stated straight at the floor. Someone started to cry.
"Ashton?" Ben had somehow ended up sitting next to Ashton and had a hand on his shoulder. "I am so sorry."
Ashton looked at him and then away. It wasn't fair. Nothing was fair.
