Ashton didnt even get to say goodbye.
Not until it was too late.
When Luke left the apartment that Sunday afternoon, the last thing Ashton said to him was 'See you at 5. Maybe bring home some dinner.' Luke replied with a sure thing. Then Luke kissed his cheek before walking out the door. It was the last time he would ever do so.
Ashton sat alone in his apartment for four hours.
When the first thirty minutes passed, Ashton wasn't worried. He assumed Luke was just getting their food and would be home soon. At six, Ashton became a little concerned and sent Luke the first text.
To: Luke❤
You running late?20 minutes later, when Luke still hadn't texted back, Ashton called him. He got sent to voice mail.
"Hey babe where are you? Everything going okay? Call me back when you can. Love you."
When it soon became 90 minutes with no response from Luke, Ashton began to really worry. He tried his hardest to calm down and convince himself it was fine. The fitting ran late and he's stuck in traffic and hasn't seen any texts or calls. It was all fine.
In the next thirty minutes, Ashton texted him twice more and called once. When he finally got a call and saw it was Luke he felt himself relax. Everything was fine.
Except, in those next three minutes, he found out nothing was fine. And 12 hours later, he would feel nothing would ever be fine again.
11 days.
It had officially been 11 days and Ashton still was no closer than before. He was still no better than before.
This didn't come as a surprise to anyone as a week and a half was a very shirt time to get over something so huge.
Ashton was now out in a small cafe by himself to clear his head. So far he had gone through three cups of coffee and nothing to eat. He hadn't eaten for four days and he didn't plan on starting. He wasn't hungry. He felt no need to eat.
He sat in a booth by himself and looked out the window as life moved on outside. Ashton was fully content just sitting by himself and trying not to think too hard when someone interupted him.
"Ashton?"
Ashton tore his gaze away from the window and looked to who was speaking to him. It was Calum.
"Oh. Hi." Ashton said upon seeing the person behind the voice.
"I'm glad I ran into you. I want to apologize for what happened last week that was probably pretty stupid of me to come talk to you of all people."
Ashton shook his head. "Yeah well. Whatever."
"How are you doing?"
Ashton glanced at Calum and shrugged his shoulders.
"It's hard."
Calum nodded. "I bet." He paused. "I am really sorry. About what happened. I couldn't even begin to imagine how hard that would be."
"Yeah. Well. It's nice to have people who are so loving. It makes it a little easier."
Calum nodded. "Okay. Well I should go but I'm glad I'm ran into you."
"Yeah. I'll see you around." Calum turned to walk away before Ashton stopped him. "Hey wait. Do you think it would be stupid of me if I left Sydney?"
"What do you mean?"
"If I moved away. Out of Sydney. Would that be stupid of me?"
"Well I think if you did, it would be more painful to come back. But if st really impossible for you to stay here and if you think that's what you really need to do, I would say go." He paused. "Why? Are you thinking of leaving?"
"Yeah." Ashton nodded. "It's just really hard. To be here."
"Do you think you're going to leave?"
"I don't know. I haven't decided yet."
"Well, good luck. With whatever you decide to do."
"Thanks."
Calum nodded then left which left Ashton to once again be alone with his thoughts.
Ashton only sat there for 10 more minutes before standing up and leaving a a small tip on the table then headed to his car. He sat in his car for another 5 minutes trying to contemplate where he wanted to go next.
Going home was too depressing, going to the Hemmings' again seemed like it happened too often, his mum was working, Michael would just force him to take a nap, and any other options did not seem comforting.
Finally, he made a decision. It was one that he knew would also not be comforting but it was something he felt he had to do.
It took another 20 minutes, one stop, and a lot of convincing himself to finally get where Ashton wanted to go.
When he did pull up, he stepped out of his car and onto the gravel. He took a deep breath, then, walked into the soft grass. It wasn't hard for him to find what he was looking for. It was easy to find. Just not easy to make himself get there. But he forced himself to walk there. He knelt down and put his knees in the grass and stuffed his hand in his pocket. He took in one more deep breathe then,
"Hey Luke." He was going to cry. He could tell that it was going to happen. He fished around his pocket before gripping onto the small object. "So, when you, um, left, I was given the choice on if I wanted to keep your ring or if I wanted you to keep it. At the time, I wanted to hold onto as much of you as possible but now I realize I should have let you keep it. It's obviously too late now but I changed my mind so," He slowly pulled his hand out of his pocket with the small band in hand. At that exact moment, tears started to cloud his vision. He didn't bother wiping them away but they didn't fall at first either, "here. I want you to keep this because I gave it to you so you would keep it forever. I know that by giving you this I was committing to you forever and even now, I want to keep that promise. Forever." He pressed the band to his lips once more before setting it in the dirt right in front of the headstone. He made it a point to cover it a little before sitting back. Now he was really crying. "I miss you so much Luke." He whispered. "Nothing feels right anymore and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing without you. I don't think I can stay in Sydney without you here. It doesn't feel right and it hurts too much. I love you baby."
Then for the second time, Ashton heard Luke's voice. It wasn't Luke speaking in that moment and it was only on Ashton's head but he heard it.
Stay.
