It was a rare sunny Seattle day, and the entire team of surgeons at Seattle Grace Mercy West were out on the field for a much-needed break from the OR. Aria Grey stood at the edge of the field, stretching out her arms, enjoying the cool breeze that ruffled her hair. She had always been competitive, and it didn't take long before her instincts kicked in. The game was about to start, and even if it was just practice, Aria was all in.
"Aria, you're up!" Derek's voice rang across the field, drawing her attention. He was already standing on the pitcher's mound, a grin plastered on his face.
With a determined nod, Aria jogged over to the batter's box, her heart already picking up pace. She could feel the eyes of her teammates on her, and that only spurred her on further. Alex, of course, was on the opposite team, leaning casually against the fence with a cocky smirk on his face.
"You ready to lose, Grey?" he called across the field.
Aria shot him a playful look, giving him a teasing grin. "Just try to keep up, Karev."
She settled into her stance as Derek wound up, throwing the first pitch—a fastball aimed straight for the strike zone. Aria didn't hesitate. With a practiced swing, the bat connected with the ball, sending it sailing high into the air. The crack of the bat was like music, and she watched the ball fly, feeling a surge of adrenaline rush through her.
"Home run!" Jackson shouted from the sidelines, his voice full of excitement.
Aria was already running, making her way around the bases with ease. First, second, third—nothing could stop her now. The cheers from her teammates spurred her on as she rounded third base, headed for home plate.
"Go, Aria!" Meredith called, laughing from the side.
When Aria slid into home, the dirt flying up from the slide, she was met with a chorus of applause from her team. She got to her feet, brushing herself off with a satisfied grin.
"Nice job, Grey," Derek called, tossing the ball back to the pitcher's mound. "Maybe I should've pitched a little harder."
Aria smirked. "Next time, Shepherd. Next time."
As she jogged back to the sidelines, she couldn't resist glancing at Alex. He was still leaning against the fence, arms crossed over his chest, looking at her with a half-smile.
"You've been holding out on me," Alex teased, his voice low and playful. "Should've told me you were this good."
"Just lucky, Karev," Aria shot back, walking past him with a wink.
Alex watched her go, clearly amused, but also clearly a little impressed. "Oh, it's on now, Grey," he muttered to himself.
Aria smirked as she turned her attention back to the game, but she could still feel Alex's gaze on her. The rivalry was only just beginning.
As the next batter stepped up, the mood on the field was a mixture of excitement and playful banter. Jackson was up to bat, and the entire team was cheering him on. Aria couldn't help but notice how the dynamic on the field had shifted when it came to her and Alex. Their friendly competition always made things more fun, but there was something else there—something more than just playing for the win.
The tension between them was undeniable. Even when they were on opposite teams, they were constantly feeding off each other's energy, and Aria found herself enjoying every second of it.
From the sidelines, Meredith and Cristina exchanged glances, both watching the growing tension between Aria and Alex with bemusement.
"Is it just me, or does it seem like they're always trying to one-up each other?" Cristina whispered to her best friend.
