" Dear Akutagawa if you are reading this I'm dead, I was absolutely miserable at school and at home
So tonight may 5 2004
I hung myself in an abandoned house,
Please don't let anybody know go get my phone off my bed and unlock it the password is your birthday and first number on my bag, act like me in the gc please just don't let anybody know. Until the day comes,"
"..."
---
Akutagawa's hands trembled as he reread the letter, and his breathing was uneven. The paper seemed too light to carry so much weight.
"Atsushi... " He choked, barely managing to say the name. He stared around the dark room of the empty house, his stomach twisting. Atsushi wasn't here anymore. Just this letter. Just this silence.
He didn't want to believe it. He couldn't believe it.
Shoving the letter into his coat pocket, Akutagawa turned and ran, the streets blurring past him as he sped towards Atsushi's house, his mind tumbling out every possible scenario of what might have happened.
He rushed into Atsushi's room. Everything was the same-the unmade bed, the papers on the floor, the phone charging on the nightstand-as if Atsushi had just left and would be back any minute.
Except he wouldn't.
With shaking hands, Akutagawa took the phone. He put in the password. His birthday. The first number on Atsushi's bag.
The screen unlocked.
Hundreds of unread messages flooded the group chat.
Dazai: where's the tiger we go a project to summit! ?
Chuuya: Did that dumbass fall asleep again?
Lucy: Atsushi, you better not be ghosting us, I swear-
Kyoka: Are you okay?
Akutagawa swallowed hard. His fingers hovered over the keyboard.
He had to do this.
He had to pretend.
Because if they found out the truth... he wasn't sure he could bear it.
With a deep breath, he typed out a response.
Atsushi: Sorry, guys. Just been busy. I'm fine.
And I give Akutagawa the project tomorrow for him to give to you Dazai-san.! "
He hit send.
Akutagawa stared at it as the chat continued to move, his hands gripping the phone so tightly his knuckles went white.
Dazai: Hey, Atsushi, you're actually responsible? Are you sure you're not dying?
<----««
Chuuya reply to Dazai message
Chuuya: Tch. You're Still a dumbass, though.
Dazai : okay now 🙄
Lucy: At least say goodnight, idiot.
Kyoka: Glad you're okay.
Akutagawa forced himself to relax. The lie had worked.
But that didn't change the crushing weight in his chest.
He looked around Atsushi's room- his room, really. His bed, his books, his life preserved like this. Atsushi was gone, but he was still here, in every inch of this place.
His stomach turned. How long could he do this? How long could he be Atsushi?
The phone buzzed again.
Kunikida: Don't forget, assignments are due on Monday. No excuses.
Akutagawa took a tremulous breath. He wouldn't let anyone find out. Not yet. Not until he figured out what to do.
He pressed the power button on the phone, darkness swallowing him whole.
And just like that he was the ghost of someone he wished he could have saved.
He couldn't save him but some could have but didn't because they told not too
Kyoka knew.
She had known for a while.
The way Atsushi’s smiles never quite reached his eyes, the way his hands trembled when he thought no one was looking, the way he hesitated before answering messages—as if he wasn’t sure anyone actually wanted to hear from him.
She had tried to tell the others, but they dismissed it.
*"He’s just stressed.”*
*"He always overthinks things.”*
*"He’ll be fine."*
But he wasn’t fine. And now, he was gone.
Kyoka sat on the rooftop of her apartment complex, staring down at the message Akutagawa had just sent in the group chat.
Atsushi: Sorry, guys. Just been busy. I’m fine.
She clenched her fists. That wasn’t Atsushi.
Her grip tightened around her phone. Akutagawa had taken his phone. Which meant…
He was covering for him.
Her heart pounded against her ribs.
She should say something. Call him out. Tell everyone the truth.
But the memory of Atsushi’s voice stopped her.
*"Please don’t let anybody know."*
If he had asked Akutagawa to keep it a secret, he probably would’ve asked her the same.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
**Kyoka:** *Okay. Just don’t ignore us too much.*
She sent it.
The weight in her chest didn’t lift.
She looked at the sky. It was empty tonight, the stars swallowed by the clouds.
Just like Atsushi had been swallowed by the world.
And just like that, two people carried the weight of a ghost no one else could see.
then end! I hope you guys have a wonderful day and ily guys and see you guys tomorrow!
