Shimizu adjusted her glasses as she scrolled through her phone, the warm chatter of a café filling the air around her. She wasn’t sure what had led her to think about high school that day—maybe the reminder of an old math competition or the faint whiff of nostalgia as she walked past their alma mater.

“Hey, Nakamura,” she said suddenly, nudging the tall man across from her.

“What?” Nakamura looked up from his iced coffee, raising an eyebrow.

“You remember Kunikida-sensei?”

Tanabe, sitting next to Nakamura, immediately perked up. “Of course! That guy was terrifying. He gave me a pop quiz on a *snow day* once. Why are you bringing him up?”

Shimizu hesitated. “I heard something… weird.”

Nakamura leaned forward, curious. “What kind of weird?”

“Well, one of my coworkers mentioned something about a guy named Kunikida working at this private detective agency in Yokohama. I brushed it off, but then they showed me this.” She flipped her phone around, revealing a website for the Armed Detective Agency.

“Whoa, is that him?” Tanabe squinted at the photo.

“Let me see,” Nakamura said, grabbing the phone. As soon as he got a good look, his jaw dropped. “No way. That’s definitely him! The glasses, the scowl—he even looks like he’s about to yell at someone for using a calculator wrong.”

Shimizu laughed. “Right? It’s so bizarre. What’s a math teacher doing in a detective agency?”

Tanabe leaned back in his chair, processing. “I mean, it *is* Kunikida-sensei. The guy used to write lesson plans that looked like military strategies. I guess detective work isn’t too far off.”

“Still,” Nakamura said, rubbing his chin, “it’s hard to believe. He just disappeared after we graduated. No goodbye, no farewell party—poof! Gone. I always figured he went to another school.”

“Well, there’s only one way to find out,” Shimizu said, standing up and grabbing her bag.

Tanabe blinked. “What, right now?”

“Why not?” Shimizu shrugged. “It’s not like we have anything better to do. Besides, don’t you want to see if it’s really him?”

Nakamura grinned. “Absolutely. I want to hear him say, ‘X equals Y if you apply the derivative,’ one more time just to confirm.”

Tanabe groaned but stood up anyway. “Fine, but if he gives me homework, I’m blaming you.”

The group arrived at the Armed Detective Agency after a short train ride, standing outside the building with a mix of nerves and excitement.

“Okay,” Shimizu said, taking a deep breath. “This is it.”

“Hold on,” Nakamura said, frowning. “What if he’s, like, undercover or something? What if he doesn’t want us to find him?”

“Undercover?” Tanabe rolled his eyes. “It’s Kunikida-sensei, not James Bond. Now let’s go.”

As they stepped inside, they were greeted by the sound of muffled voices and the faint smell of coffee. A man with messy brown hair looked up from the couch, lazily waving at them.

“Welcome! Are you here for business or to pester Kunikida?”

The group exchanged glances.

“Uh, we’re looking for someone named Kunikida,” Shimizu said cautiously.
