Sans brought Papyrus down, if only to keep an eye on him while they worked. "DR. GASTER!!!" He was really happy to see the doc and hugged onto his legs. With a gentle smile, Gaster patted his head. "Yes, Papyrus. It is a pleasure to see you as well." It pleased him that he was so well liked by his kin. It truly was a nice feeling. "WHAT'S THAT?" Papy pointed at the perseverance soul. "that's a super secret project the doc and i are working on. it might be able to bring us to the surface one day... theoretically." Papyrus gave his brother a quizzical look. "What Is... Theo-red-ick-ally?" Papyrus asked, sounding out the big word. Gaster's soul nearly melted right then and there. "It means that it could happen, but we are unsure until we try it." Sans approached the framework that was going to be their reset machine. "we gotta test it first, buddy. get this thing built up. but it's a secret, k? we don't wanna falsely raise hope, then it doesn't work." Papyrus nodded quickly. "THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL TELL NO ONE OF YOUR SECRET PROJECT!!!" He promised, earning some affection from Sans and Gaster.

The frame of the machine was nothing more than that right now. Just a frame. A skeleton of something Gaster was insisting was beyond themselves. Sans supposed he wasn't wrong if it worked and they could go back to before the barrier was made, then he would agree. For now, they didn't know the extent of the reset power within the soul and how much determination it actually held/could give without it breaking. "First things first, the timeline monitor is top priority. That needs to be functioning at maximum capacity before we do anything else. We don't want to rip a hole in time that can not be fixed." Sans nodded along, agreeing on every account. If they were going to mess with time, they had to be careful about it. Thus, that was the start the actual building of the machine. The first side would house the timeline monitor so they could make sure they weren't breaking the rules of time too much. It wasn't anything fancy, just two lines running side by side together. That was probably from Gaster's first reset. Actually, seeing it on screen made this all the more exciting.

From that monitor, they slowly worked through the necessities. A housing chamber for the soul, a power chamber, a cooling system, an emergency shutdown, and, of course, the computer that would give them access to the save point. A few months later and suddenly, it was ready for testing. "how far back should we go?" Sans looked over the machine's screen. Gaster was inputting start-up commands and getting the save point ready. "A day should do. It is only a test run, after all." Sans nodded to Gaster's words, though one worry bugged him. "what if we lose progress on the machine in the reset and have to do it over? it's not like i'll remember..." Gaster gave a momentary pause to give Sans a reassuring smile. "You may not, but I will. Besides, so long as the soul is in there, the machine should be untouchable to time. Theoretically." Sans scoffed good naturedly, but let him continue what he was doing. "whatever you say, g, whatever you say. i guess we will be seeing it on the monitor, then?" He glanced at the timeline monitor. "Of course. See you on the other side, Sans."

Sans woke up to his alarm and got into his clothes and jacket for the day before going to see if Papyrus was up. Of course he was. He was Papyrus. "Good Morning, Brother..." Papyrus yawned and crawled out of bed before rushing downstairs. "BREAKFAST TIME!" Sans laughed sleepily and followed him downstairs to make them oatmeal with dinosaur eggs. Papyrus favorite. "Are You Working On Your Secret Project Today, Brother?" He asked as Sans boiled some milk and added oats into it to absorb. "mmhm, we'll be testing it today, bro." He turned down the heat as he got a strange sense of deja vu. Like this had happened before. "Can I Join?!" Papyrus asked eagerly. "not this time, bud, you gotta be safely away, just in case..." Papyrus started to complain until Sans dished up a bowl and carried it over. "here, bro, enjoy." His complaints were forgotten as he squealed and dug in to find the dinosaurs in his oatmeal. Sans made himself a bowl and helped Papyrus find all of them for the remainder of breakfast. After that, he had Papyrus get ready to go to the Inn.

After Papyrus was dropped off, he went to the basement. "It's about time you showed up." But Gaster was already in there and the machine, already on and completed. Come on, Sans, come look!" He urged Sans to look at the timeline monitor before Sans could question how long he'd been down there. Reluctantly, he approached and peered at the monitor, his eyelights growing in size. "we... already tested it? we reset?" On the monitor, one line continued, while the other had looped back and split off into a third timeline. Gaster nodded eagerly. "Yes, Sans, we did. It worked. Do you know what this means?" It meant a lot of things. Sans knew that potentially, they could do anything! Well, Gaster could. Sans couldn't exactly remember these resets. But still, this was a whole new world to explore, and they had discovered it! "everything..." Sans replied. "this means everything..." Gaster nodded eagerly. "We could do anything to change the timeline, including making sure the barrier was never raised." Sans nodded excitedly. "let's do that! let's save monsterkind!" Gaster laughed loudly. "We need to run more tests before we can do that. See how far back we can go first. Then we will save monsterkind." Gaster promised.
