The Grey Door

Sans wasn't usually the guy to follow the kid. Yeah, he had his checkpoints with them to see how they were doing, if they killed anybody, stuff like that, but he never actively followed them. He didn't intend to keep following them now. There was just. One thing he had to do was first. He needed to know where Frisk saw this Grey Door they had talked about. He wanted to see what was in it and if it needed to be destroyed. For his peace of mind. The skeleton watched as Frisk crouched beside the mouse hole and knocked, the creature inside squeaking in response. Frisk smiled, knocking again to hear the squeak before getting up to continue their journey. It didn't seem long at all before the atmosphere seemed to shift, and Sans could feel static crawling around his bones. It made him shutter and wrap his jacket tighter around his frame. He could feel it. They were getting close. Frisk shivered as they stared at the wall with the quiet murmur. "It's back..." They seemed to rush past it, the hall Sans couldn't see, but he could feel before they continued towards his telescope business. Welp. They would have to wait for him, he supposed.

It took Sans a bit, going by touch alone. Eventually, he found himself stumbling forward and into the grey hall. It was pretty damn plain as far as halls went, the same monochrome color. Sans followed it down with the static seeming to drag him deeper into the grey abyss until he found himself face to face with the door. According to Frisk, the mystery man was inside. A memory long since forgotten by the world, yet so persistent that he was still here. Welp might as well get it done and over with. Sans grabbed the knob and twisted, letting himself inside to see Dr. Gaster himself after all these years. The room was like stepping into the past. The room was full of clutter. Of half finished projects and schematics, test tunes and flasks, and scientific gear of all sorts. And standing in the middle of the office was Gaster himself. He was a lot more... melty than before, his face and body seeming to merge into one blob. Sans still recognized him, though, even after all these years. Nothing felt as authoritative and dangerous as Gaster.

✂︎💧︎□︎ ⍓︎□︎◆︎ ♍︎□︎❍︎♏︎ ♋︎⧫︎ ●︎♋︎⬧︎⧫︎📬︎✂︎ ("So you come at last.") Gaster's voice echoed despite the small space, and Sans did his best to suppress a shutter. "i knew you were still around. i just didn't know where." Sans replied, watching the erased scientist closely. ✂︎⚐︎❒︎ ⍓︎□︎◆︎ ♎︎♓︎♎︎■︎🕯︎⧫︎ ⬥︎♋︎■︎⧫︎ ⧫︎□︎ 🙵■︎□︎⬥︎📬︎✂︎ ("Or you didn't want to know.") Gaster stated, and he certainly wasn't wrong. Sans could have lived the rest of his life, free of Gaster, and yet he was here. "leave the human alone. i'm not gonna let them finish what you started, g." This was why. ✂︎❄︎♒︎♏︎⍓︎ ♋︎●︎❍︎□︎⬧︎⧫︎ ⬧︎◆︎♍︎♍︎♏︎♏︎♎︎♏︎♎︎ ♓︎■︎ ⧫︎♒︎♏︎ ♏︎⌧︎◻︎♏︎❒︎♓︎❍︎♏︎■︎⧫︎📪︎ 💧︎♋︎■︎⬧︎📬︎ ✡︎□︎◆︎❒︎ ❍︎♏︎♎︎♎︎●︎♓︎■︎♑︎ ♑︎❒︎□︎⬥︎⬧︎ ⧫︎♓︎❒︎♏︎⬧︎□︎❍︎♏︎📬︎✂︎ ("They almost succeeded in the experiment, Sans. Your meddling grows tiresome.") He wasn't going to let Gaster win and destroy this timeline. "yeah, well, now it won't be happening at all." He couldn't make the same mistakes twice. ✂︎🕈︎♒︎♋︎⧫︎ ♎︎♓︎♎︎ ⍓︎□︎◆︎ ♎︎□︎✍︎✂︎ ("What did you do?") Gaster's demand was sharp and aggressive, Sans stepped back, closer to the door. "something i shoulda done long ago." Frisk was stronger than Gaster. Now that they knew, they wouldn't be convinced into genocide. He was sure of it. ✂︎💧︎♋︎■︎⬧︎✏︎ 🕈︎☟︎✌︎❄︎ 👎︎✋︎👎︎ ✡︎⚐︎🕆︎ 👎︎⚐︎✍︎✏︎✂︎ ("Sans! WHAT DID YOU DO?!") Gaster screamed as he seemed to grow in size and mass, the Dead Timeline contorting him to look worse than he was. "stay away from the kid, g." Sans slammed the door as Gaster reached for him.

The hall wasn't something Sans ever intended to return to after that. He teleported ahead to see where the kid was so he could meet them at his next checkpoint. He didn't know I that would even work. Talking never had before with Gaster, but he also believed in Frisk. Frisk wouldn't continue to follow in Gaster's footsteps, and this reset would hopefully be the last. The kid was battling Undyne now, almost to Hotland. Sans ported over to his station to settle and wait for the kiddo. It didn't take long at all. The kid had done all this before and was buzzing through it in a synch. They gave Undyne the water, went to the lab, and met Alphys and Mettaton. They did the puzzles, met Muffet, and got past her via donut. They participated in Mett's shows, stacked hotdogs, and cats on their head. Before Sans knew it, they were leaving Hotland to go to the C.O.R.E, where they would have their final showdown with Mettaton in that weird pose off of his. Soon, they would struggle against Flowey. Sans was kinda looking forward to it. It meant the end of all this.

Asriel. He'd never met the kid, but he'd heard the stories, and it seemed they were true. He and Frisk hugged it out before they went to see the sunset. "so kid. you finally did it. you freed all the monsters. what's next?" Sans asked as they looked out. "I'm gonna live with mom... I won't reset again unless absolutely necessary, Sans, I promise..." Sans gave them a side glance before nodding in seeming agreement. "gaster's gonna be after you, kid. he has ways. you'll tell me if he's trying to get in your head, right?" Sans asked quietly. Frisk nodded immediately. It wasn't even a question. Sans was the only one that would ever understand or remember. He was the only person they could trust with such things. "WHAT IS THAT BRIGHT BALL?" Papyrus finally asked, cutting through their quiet conversation. "we call that the sun, my friend." Sans replied smoothly to his bro. "THAT'S THE SUN?! WOWIE!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M FINALLY MEETING THE SUN!!!" Papyrus exclaimed. Sans and Frisk both knew what was next. "welp, better get ready for him to take off. see ya around, kid." Sans winked at them as Papyrus took off to meet some humans.

So, this is something that was sent to me by a friend a solid six...? Years back. Something like that. Anyway, it was a neat theory about Gaster and the Goners that we really liked, and I was determined to write it into a book someday. Now, here we are! It is written! Yay! And for those who didn't read the description, this is, in fact, my 100th book that I started on this platform. A milestone! Double yay! Hope ya'll enjoy it, and have a great morning/afternoon/night!
