I don't remember the exact moment i realised we were trapped.
Maybe it was when karan slammed his fists against the now-wall-where-the-door-was and screamed a loud "FUCK!" maybe it was the way varun pulled me closer protectively his hand trembling slightly but still acting like a shield
Or maybe it was the air the air wasn't air anymore. It was thick. Heavy. Like we were inhaling secrets.
The light flickered above us like it was laughing. The red glow on the floor had faded, but aneesh's scream still echoed in my bones.
We were trapped in a maze.
Not a normal one-this place was alive. The walls moved. I swear they breathed. Like lungs. Like they were waiting for one of us to take a wrong step.
Koel gripped my wrist hard. "What now?" she whispered, but her voice cracked mid-sentence.
"I... I don't know," I admitted. And I hated saying that. I hated not knowing. Not being able to protect anyone. We just lost Sid. Then Aneesh. I was tired of losing people.
"Look!" Varun shouted, pointing at a faint blue glow emerging from one of the walls
It was a narrow corridor like it had just been born from the shadows we all looked at each other. No words. Just nods.
Karan stepped ahead, still breathing heavy, blood drying on his knuckles from the fight with Aneesh. I could tell his body was tired but his soul? His soul was roaring.
"I'll go first," he said.
"No," I replied instinctively. "We go together."
He glanced at me - something flickered in his eyes - maybe pride, maybe worry, maybe... love?
The corridor was narrow and long Too narrow for comfort walls pressed in like they were hungry for skin contact And then...
Whispers
At first, I thought it was in my head. But no
Everyone heard them
"She will betray you."
"He'll leave you behind."
"You're the reason Sid died."
"You liked Aneesh's touch, didn't you?"
I flinched.
"What the actual hell," Koel whispered, eyes wide.
"DON'T LISTEN TO THEM," Karan roared, clenching his fists. "THEY'RE LYING."
But the thing is... they weren't lying entirely
These walls knew things. Our things
Secrets we never told. Thoughts we buried deep Feelings we didn't want to face
"I wanna go back," Koel whimpered. "I can't do this... this place is inside my head."
Varun turned around and held her face. "Then look at me," he said softly "Don't listen to the walls. Just look at me ."
She nodded, holding back tears.
Suddenly, another red screen appeared ahead of us - hanging mid-air like it wasn't even real.
And this time, it read:
"TASK 4: THE MIRROR ROOM"
Only the one with the darkest secret may enter.
If no one comes forward in 5 minutes... all will bleed.
We all froze.
"What the fuck is the mirror room?" Karan asked.
I didn't answer.
I couldn't.
Because I knew.
I knew what that meant.
I stepped forward.
"Monami, what are you doing?" Koel asked in panic.
Varun reached out to grab my arm but I shrugged him off.
"I have to do this," I said, not looking back. "I know what they want."
"NO." baron and karam was in front of me in seconds. "You're not doing this alone."
I looked at them, eyes stinging with pain. "I saw her die, Karan."
He frowned. "Who?"
"My mom," I whispered. "And I didn't save her. I could've. But I froze. I watched her take her last breath. And I just... stood there."
The silence was deafening. Even the walls stopped whispering. Karan's expression shattered. He reached out and cupped my face.
"You were a child-"
"It doesn't matter," I interrupted. "It haunts me. Every day. That's my darkest secret."
And with that, I walked into the Mirror Room.
It slammed shut behind me.
Pitch black.
"Monamiiiiiiii" all there screams faded and then suddenly-bright white lights. Blinding. Sterile. Silent.
The room was made of mirrors. All sides. Top. Bottom. Infinite reflections of me, standing alone. Judging me. Every version of myself staring like I was disgusting. Like I was guilty. Like I deserved everything that was happening.
Then I heard it.
Her voice.
My mother's.
"You let me die."
"No," I whimpered, looking around.
"No, please"
"You froze."
"I was scared..."
"You failed."
I fell to my knees. I couldn't breathe.
I was drowning again. This time not in water. In guilt.
And then... something shattered. Not glass. Not bone.
My own voice.
I screamed so loud that the mirrors shook.
"I'M SORRY."
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you."
"I'm sorry I survived."
"I'm sorry for being weak!"
Then silence.
All the mirrors turned black. One by one.
And then the door creaked open.
I stepped out-barely standing. Tears in my eyes. But I was free.
Karan caught me in his arms instantly.
"You did it," he said, holding me close.
"I think... I passed the task," I whispered.
"No," he said, brushing my wet hair back, "You faced your demon."
Behind us, the wall lit up again.
TASK PASSED
Next Task Loading...
Time Remaining: 6 HOURS.
I sighed. Exhausted. Broken. But something in me shifted.
This place wanted to break us.
But what it didn't know was-
I'm already broken.
And I'm still standing.
