The floor beneath us shook a pedestal rose from the center of the room
On it: a gun
Black Cold Loaded I stared at it like it was alive like it was staring back varun stepped toward it slowly, and I instinctively grabbed his wrist
“Don’t” I whispered. “Please don’t”
He turned his face toward me and that’s when I saw it something had broken in him after Koel Something deep but behind that something else was glowing
“I’ll do it” he said
“No” I replied immediately “We’ll figure something out There’s always something”
“There’s not” he said gently “Not this time”
I turned to Karan. “Say something”
But he didn’t he stood still jaw clenched,eyes stormy with things he wasn’t saying typical Karan always carrying pain like it was armor but I didn’t want silence I wanted someone to scream to fight to stop this varun lifted the gun
He didn’t aim at me
Not at Karan
Not at anyone
But himself
“No” I choked out “You’re not doing this”
He smiled god that stupid soft smile
“Remember the first time we met?” he asked“I was crying outside the library You sat beside me You didn’t even ask what happened You just handed me chocolate and said ‘Cry louder, I don’t think the moon can hear you’”
I laughed through my tears
“You were such a mess”
“I still am” he said, eyes glassy“But you were the first person who ever made me feel like that was okay”
I stepped closer “Then don’t leave me”
“I have to” His voice cracked.“You think I don’t want to stay? But I made a promise Remember what I said after your accident 3 year back?”
I nodded slowly
“You said… you’d keep me safe That you’d protect me even if the whole fucking world ended”
“And now it’s ending” he said softly “And I still meant every word"
He turned to Karan
“Look after her” Varun said “She’s stronger than she knows. But she shouldn’t have to be”
Karan’s fists clenched at his sides His eyes shimmered but he didn’t move Coward or maybe just human
I took another step “Give me the gun Varun Please We’ll do this together We’ll find a way”
“No,” he said and tears rolled down his cheeks “You are my best friend Monami You gave me a reason to live when I didn’t think I deserved one. And now—”
He placed the barrel to his own chest, right where his heart was
“I’m giving you a reason to live”
“VARUN—”
He smiled through tears
“I love you Mona Always and forever”
The sound of the gunshot shattered something inside me I didn’t even scream i fell to my knees and crawled to him grabbing his face, shaking him
“Wake up” I whispered. “Please wake up.” blood soaked his shirt his skin still warm his eyes still open but there was nothing left in them
Just… gone

Karan fell to the floor beside me silent not comforting not crying just breaking
I cradled Varun’s head in my lap rocking back and forth this wasn't a game anymore this was hell and I wasn’t sure I wanted to survive it
