In the the Ton, there are very few things that spread faster than gossip between ladies, espeically when the gossip was as hot as a cup of tea. And that could not stand more true than the week, when the world discovered Rebekah Witworth was now a widow. A young widow at that. She was only twenty-one and her husband was a mere twenty-five when he died. Many speculated as to why he died, some say he was cursed by the heavens, some say that he engaged in too many substances, however tje over arching theory was that Rebekah had been the reason his heart gave out. The Ton made sure to inform her of this too. Which is why it was a shock to all when she actually showed up or was even invited to the Danbury Ball the next year.

Rebekah walked into the ball room in a dark purple dress, as dark colors were propper for those who had been widowed, it basically labeled her as fragile and used goods. She heard whispers of what people believed she had done in the year she had spet alane in her home as a widow with no children.

"I heard she stole her neighbors prized stallion and gave him a main of rainbow!"

"I have heard that all she does is pace the rocks outside of her home planning how she may kill her next husband"

"It was her fault her husbands heart gave out!"

she heard all these whispers and believed that this is how everyone thought of her...while she was partially right...there was one who found all of this rumbling rather...interesting.

"Benedict I do not like those eyes you are making at Mrs.Witworth" Anthony muttered to his younger brother

"I believe it is Miss Witworth now brother" Benedict smirked

Anthony's head turned to his brother realizing what he was implying

"You cannot seriously be considering courting her?!" Anthony seethed

"Why would I not-"

"Do you have a death wish? Did you not hear of what she did to her last husband? Not to mention the other rumors I hear of her"

Benedict smirked at his brother

"If you believe everything Lady Whstledown and the maids say, then you truly are a fool brother...and personally I believe the rumors make her that much more appealing, its like painting a picture backwards, you must figure out what is a tracing and what is hand drawn"

Anthony let out a huff

"I am going to get a drink, just becareful with your affections brother"

When Anthony walked away Benedict took a deep breath and then walked up to the maiden that was standing in the corner.

Rebekah was swirling her glass of champgne as she tried to avoid all contact with everyone around her. The only reason she had come wss to prove she did not care about what the Ton had said about her...she did not, but that did not mean she wanted to hear it. Suddenly a voice pulled her out of her trance.

"What a lovely evening, how has the corner served you tonight?"

when she looked up she saw a rather handsome man and could not believe he was talking to her. she smirked

"It has served its purpose"

"And what purpose may that be?" he asked

"It has hidden me from the Ton...well until now"

he chuckled lightly

"Well I am sorry to disturb your peace, but I could not just stand around while a lovely lady such as yourself stood in the corner by her lonesome"

"Well if you did, you would fit in with the rest of the Ton" she said with a sad laugh

"I have never been known for fitting in Ms.Witworth" he smirked

"You know of me I see," she said with a light smile

"I do, but if I am being honest I do not believe what the Ton says, I would rather have a direct source"

She smiled

"What is your name sir?"

"Benedict Bridgerton"

"Rebekah Witworth" she stuck out her hand and he kissed her knuckles

"Maybe we can discuss some rumors over a nice dance?" he offered his arm

"That sounds wonderful"

Rebekah and Benedict spent the rest of the night laughing and talking about the differebt rumors that had been spread about Rebekah, and after all the dancing they decided to take a walk outside to Lady Danburry's garden.

"I have had a wonderful night Mr.Bridgerton...I do hope that my repuatation does not reflect on you too poorly"

he laughed lightly

"I would not care if it did"

They stopped walking and sat down on a nearby bench. She looked up at him and he looked down at her.

"I have never met anyone like you"

She said honestly

"and I like you"

he smiled

They stayed looking at each other for a minute. She was memorizing his face and all of its wonderful features just in case this was the last time she was to see him. She memorized the way his hair fell, the way his clothes fit him just right, and his eyes which could pierce right through to her soul. Suddenly his eyes got closer to hers as he connected their foreheads and eventually their lips.

Rebekah could not help but sink ionto the kiss. She placed her hands on either side of his face and kissed him back like she had never been kissed before. She felt sparks emit from her stomach and it was almost as if no one else existed in that moment. When he pulled back he looked to her and smiled.

"Be mine" he stated plainly

"are you sure you wished to be cursed by the heavens?" she laughed

"I would live a life of eternal damnation for one more kiss just like that"

she smiled

"consider yourself cursed"

He gave his signature smirk and spinned her around, when he sat her back down she sighed of relief

"My husband died of influenza...not of a curse from the heavens"

Benedict looked up from his love trance

"Why have you not tell the Ton" Benedict asked

"He did not wish for the entirety of the Ton to know, so I respected his wishes"

"He was a lucky man...he was a great man, and he will live forever through you," benedict then grabbed her hand and placed it on his heart "and now through me too"
