Phoebes POV
"What am I supposed to wear?!" I yell frustratedly to myself, staring into my closet. Before I knew I was bringing Sammy I hadn't really cared what I was going to look like at this thing but now everything I try on is disappointing. When I feel as though all hope is lost I uncover a strapless red dress. I slide it over my uncovered body and it fits perfectly. It hugs every curve on my body and lies a couple inches above my knee. I'm admiring my reflection in the mirror when I hear a knock at the door. I smile to myself and go to answer it. When I open the door, Sammy is standing against the door frame with dress pants and a button up shirt that perfectly frames his toned body. I'm snapped out of my trance when I hear Sammy's voice."You look...stunning." He says grinning and looking me up and down.
"Thank you" I say blushing, my eyes falling to the ground. "You look great too!"
"Thanks, so you ready to go?"
"Sure, let me just grab the tickets." We walk side by side in silence down to the elevator and grab a taxi when we reach the side walk. After an awkward 30 minute taxi ride we arrive at our destination. We approach the building and take the elevator up to the party room the company reserved for the dinner. Behind the large room doors sits a long wood table with perfectly set placemats in front of every chair.
"You didn't tell me this was fancy, I'm walking up in here with khakis" Sammy leans and whispers into my ear. I lightly giggle and tell him "don't worry about it, you look great" he smirks at me and then takes my hand and leads me to the table.
Upon everyone's arrival, everyone takes their seats and the waiters bring out the salad. I'm staring at my plate, pushing the lettuce back and forth when I feel Sammy's breath on the back of my ear.
"You look really into the salad." He chuckles. I feel my face turning a color of crimson red and I nudge his shoulder. I glance around the table and see all the managers and my boss making conversation with all the other employees. I try to listen in on some of the conversations but I don't understand a word of what they're saying and I feel so out of place. I'm like the unwanted kid at the grown up table. By the time the main courses are out I can see the boredom on Sammy's face.
"I'm sorry I brought you here, this is so boring." I whisper to him. He smiles, "it's okay, I don't mind being here with you."
"Here I have an idea," I smirk before taking Sammy's hand and leading him over to Lily's seat.
"Hey uh Lily, would you mind telling Mr.Thomas, I'm very sorry but Sammy and I have to leave." Lily looks at me concerned,"aw why?"
"Well the uh steak didn't exactly agree with Sammy" I turn around to see Sammy roll his eyes and I try to contain my laughter.
"Oh well I hope he feels better, see you on Monday" she smiles before returning to the conversation.
"Let's get out of here." I smile and pull Sammy to the door. We take a taxi down to the center of town and the driver stops in the middle of the square. I step out of the car and I'm amazed, the lights are beautiful.
"Wow." Sammy says in awe.
"I know, isn't it incredible." Suddenly Sammy grabbed my hand and whisked me down the sidewalk. It's nights like this you realize how beautiful this city is. All the signs, lights, people.
"Let's go in there." I turn and see Sammy pointing to an old 50's theme diner across the street.
"Sammy were far to overdressed to go in there." I half laugh at his request.
"Oh come on, we'll just be the best looking people there." He sees the hesitation on my face and reassures me, "come on, it'll be fun" I finally agree and follow him across the street. We walk in and hear the ding of the bell on the door.
"Have a seat wherever you like darling." A waitress, who looks like she's old enough to have been here when the restaurant opened, called over to us. We grabbed a booth in the corner in front of a window that faced the outer street.
"So what looks good?" Sammy asked scanning the menu.
"Anything after that awful steak." I giggle. He laughs in response and motions for the waitress to come to our table.
"Yes honey?" She asks.
"We would both like a cheeseburger with fries and a vanilla shake." I watch Sammy's face as he orders for the both of us. It's nice being treated this way.
"Will that be all sugars?"
"Yes thank you mam" the waitress leaves to put our order in and Sammy and I begin talking. Before I know it we've spent 3 hours in this little diner talking about anything and everything in our lives.
"So basically my best friend takes my hand and drags me around on these roller skates around our street. We come to a curb, he loses control and next thing I know I'm flying into our neighbors fence." Both Sammy and I are completely dying of laughter and hunched over in the booth.
"Oh my gosh that's the greatest story" I laugh in between each word. I finally compose myself and when I do I see Sammy staring at me.
"What?" I question bashfully.
"I always thought you were pretty but when you laugh it just....you're just beautiful." I blush at his compliment and just as in about to respond the waitress interrupts us.
"Sorry darlings but we're about to close. We're gonna need you to leave." We follow the lady's instructions and head back down the street and grab a cab back to our apartment building.
"I had a great time tonight Sammy, and again I'm sorry I dragged you to that stupid dinner."
"Don't worry about it, it turned out to be a great evening." Sammy slowly began to walk closer to me as my back pressed up against the cold wood of my door. His eyes never left mine as his face inched closer and closer to me. Within a split second his lips were on mine, and just as fast as they were on my lips they were gone. He held my eye contact for a few more seconds before saying, "I'll see you around."
What just happened?
