Phoebe's POV

I walked out of my apartment the next morning and stared at the number on the door across the hall. I was startled when it started to open so I quickly turned around and pretended to lock my door.

"Oh hey didn't see ya there!" Smooth right?

"Hey." Sammy laughed. "how are you this morning?"

"Exhausted, its still impossible for me to get sleep sometimes with all the traffic outside my window." I complain.

"Well they don't call it the city that never sleeps for nothing." I slightly giggle at his joke.

"Touché." I answer, "well I gotta get to work, see later." I wave and make my way to the stairs.

"See ya neighbor." Sammy winks just as I disappear into the stair well.

I walk into the tall building, up to the top floor as every morning, get my coffee that I still absolutely hate and sit behind the computer and begin working on my newest assignment.

I read the repetitive title "How do I know if he likes me?" every girls question since the beginning of time. I thought about what cliche answer I could form into a paragraph when I heard a knock on my door. I quietly groaned from the disturbance and then said "Come in."

Lily, my assistant, entered with her long blonde hair pulled back into a polished french braid and her face bare except for some mascara on her bright blue eyes. "Ms.Grier, I mean Phoebe," I smiled at her correction, "um Mr.Thomas wanted me to inform you that you have to bring a date to the business dinner this weekend." I groaned in response.

"May I ask why?" I asked irritated at the request.

"I'm not quite sure but he said everyone else is bringing their husband or wife and you're the only one attending without at date." She said cautiously walking up to my desk.

"That's okay. I'm perfectly fine attending alone." I said trying to find any loophole.

"I'm sorry Phoebe, but I don't think that's how that works." she slightly giggled.

"Ugh fine. Tell Mr.Thomas I'll have a date ready." I rolled my eyes. Lily turned on her heels and left, closing the door behind her. Where am I supposed to find a date in enough time? Like I said I literally have no friends in this town. I pushed the thought out of my head and tried to finish what I could of this work day and just worry about it later.

I got home that evening and practically collapsed onto my couch, face down in the pillow. My eyes fluttered closed and as I was about to fall into my deep sleep there was a faint knock at my door.

"Ugh what now?!" I groaned to myself and slouched over to the door. I quickly turned the knob and pulled the door open.

"What?!" I yelled before seeing who was at the door.

"Sorry, did I disturb you?" Sammy asked.

"No you're fine, just a rough day." I said rubbing my eyes and pushing the hair out of my face.

"Well you dropped these papers in the hallway, I'm assuming they're from your mail." he said extending the envelopes all addressed with my name.

"Oh thank you." I said grabbing them as he released them from his hand.

"Well I'll just leave you alone now." He said turning around to enter his room.

"Uh wait!" I said getting an idea, "I know we don't really know each other but my work is having this dumb business dinner and my boss said I need a date. Would you wanna go with me, I understand if you don't want t-"

"I'd love to." he interrupted. We smiled at each other before he asked, "um what do I need to wear?"

"Just something a little dressy, it's not black tie or anything."

"Alright sounds good, I'll see you then." he smiled, revealing his adorable dimples and slowly closed the door behind him, leaving me standing in the doorway feeling the happiest I've felt in a long time.
