Phoebes POV
*two weeks later*
These past couple weeks with my family have been really great but specifically these two weeks with Cam have been really great. He's been super sweet and we've hung out a lot and he even bought me flowers the other day. Part of me is really loving this but another part of me is scared that I'm going to go back to the crazy in love girl who ended up heartbroken, because how could he still be in love with me after I left him at the airport, it just wouldn't make sense.
I get up and get myself ready when I hear a knock at my bedroom door. "Come in." I call. I take the time to glance over to the door before picking out my clothes for the day and see Cam emerge into the room, plopping himself onto the foot of my bed.
"Hey cam what's up?" I ask as I change into a graphic tee and flannel.
"I was wondering if you'd wanna go to the arcade downtown with your brothers and I. I know its kinda lame and childish but..."
"Are you kidding?! I love arcades, let's go!" I interrupt him and immediately race down the stairs. Hayes and Nash are waiting in the car and Cam is following closely behind me. It's takes about 30 minutes to get downtown and once we find a parking spot were all piled inside buying our tokens. I used to love coming here as a kid with Nash and Hayes, we used to beg our mom or Will to drive us on Saturdays. Once we buy our tokens Nash and Hayes scatter and leave Cam and I alone.
"This place is awesome!" he states, his eyes lighting up at all the different games.
"I know! So where to first?" I question.
"Pac-Man!" Cam smiles like a little kid when he catches the game out of the corner of his eye and runs over, yanking my arm with him. I giggle at his excitment.
"Dude this is the best game!" He tosses 2 coins into the machine and begins playing like a pro. I have to admit I'm impressed.
After hours of playing game after game, and running out of tokens, Cam and I retired to the juice bar and sat down at a high top.
"Wow Phoebe, you're really good at these games, it's kinda hot." He jokes playfully and I nudge his arm.
"Well you are too, I had no idea you were such a gamer. And here I thought I knew everything about you." I reply, taking a sip of my lemonade.
"Oh, so you think you're the Cameron Dallas expert huh?" He raised an eyebrow.
"I know so." I answer smartly.
"Prove it." He says, leaning in, making my heart beat faster. I take a gulp of air before beginning my case.
"Alright well, your favorite colors are blue and green, you cut your foot open on a tin can filming a video with my brother-"
"Okay that's easy the whole world knows that one." He interrupts defensively.
"Okay, but does the whole world know you had to hold mine and Nash's hand the entire way to the emergency room to keep from crying."
"Touché."He answers, letting me finish.
"Your favorite clothing brand is Volcom and you hate having to dress up to do things, you would much rather stay in your sweatpants. You wear a size 11 shoe. You're 5'10" even though you always try to lie and tell people you're 5'11". "
"Woah woah woah.... I am 5'11"." He corrects, throwing his hands in the air.
"Whatever you say big guy." I laugh, "you're super close with your mom and sister and you talk to both of them on the phone atleast five times a week. And lastly, about a year ago, you and I were talking late at night, when you came to stay with Nash, and you told me that all you want one day is to fall in love with your best friend." I lean back in my chair and grin.
"Well, it seems you do know me Ms.Grier, but I have to say I think I know you better." he slyly grins, knowing that kind of comment would get under my skin.
"Is that so?" I cross my arms over my chest and before he's about to answer, my phones dings. "Hold that thought." I look at the screen and see a reminder from the airline of my flight times tomorrow.
"Dang it." I groan under my breath.
"What is it?" Cam asked concerned.
"It's just....I forgot I have to leave tomorrow." I reply, still staring down at my phone screen.
"Oh right, and see that Sammy guy." Cam's voice grows sad with every word.
"Cam it's not like that-" I try to reason with him but he interrupts me."
Yes it is! I heard your conversation with him on the phone a couple weeks ago. You told him you missed him!" He raises his voice, but I raise it right back.
"Why in the hell were you listening to my phone conversation?!" We've now gained several looks from the people around us.
"Because....because.." Cam grows quieter.
"Because... Because...spit it out cam!" I mock, getting frustrated.
"Because I was jealous okay! I know that whatever you two have is a lot more than a friendship and I could hear it in your voice when you talked to him and it made me jealous. But you shouldn't be with him because he doesn't know you like I do!" I stare blankly at him, as he continues, "Does he know your favorite color is blue? Does he know you're a total daddy's girls, or that Hayes is your favorite brother and you would gladly admit it. Or how about that a year ago you broke your leg trying to do a back-flip on the trampoline or that when you go on tour you have to sleep in Nash's room to keep from getting homesick. Or that your favorite shows are One Tree Hill and Friends and you can fluently recite lines from both and you agreed with my statement of wanting to fall in love with your best friend." He regains his breath before finishing with one last statement. "He doesn't know any of those things, but I do, and so much more."
I have no words so I do what I do best. I leave. I ran out the front door and began walking. I didn't care if it took me an hour to get home, I didn't care if it took me 5 hours to get home but I didn't want to stay there. After a conversation like that you think it would be easy for me to stay here with Cameron but he was also right. Even though Sammy doesn't know me like Cameron does and even though I spent years being in love with Cameron, Sammy is a nice guy and it felt like with Sammy there was no drama. No Brittany, no yelling, no past history. And with Cam everything felt complicated, all the time. It felt like no matter how much one of us wanted to be with the other, something always got in the way.
