Merry Christmas

(Neville's Pov)
Christmas Eve came like a whirlwind. Hogwarts was decorated beautifully, and I was rather cheerful. It was still very cold outside, so I put on a sweater to keep warm.

Harry and Ron were already awake, and excited to find presents. They were talking to each other, so I thought I'd go into the common room.

Everybody was mostly wrapping presents, when it suddenly came to me. I should get Luna a present.

I got my hat and mittens, and headed towards Hogsmeade. Through the halls, I saw people were setting up mistletoe. Luna must be frantic. She told me about how nargles lived in mistletoe, and she wouldn't go near them. I laughed a bit, wondering what she was doing now.

The snow crunched under my feet as I went through the tiny village of Hogsmeade. I had no idea what to get for her. I finally decided I would just get her something sweet from Honeyduke's.

Just as I was headed towards there, I saw Luna waving. She was talking to her Ravenclaw friend.

Luna came up to me. "Hello, Neville." She smiled. She waved goodbye to her Ravenclaw friend, and then she turned back to me.

"What's up?" I found myself all flustered. And I had no idea why. "I was just h-headed towards Honeyduke's. What about you?" Luna shrugged. "Just decided to come with some friends." Her eyes suddenly lit up. "Neville, I want to show you something."

She took my hand, and pulled me through Hogsmeade. Luna seemed really excited, and I wondered what she wanted to show me.

We were at the end of the road, and we went between two buildings. And then, we were in a small clearing behind Hogsmeade.

For a moment, I was going to ask Luna why we were here when I saw a thestral, and her foal.

The foal was learning to stand, and was having a bit of guidance from its mother. Luna smiled, and whispered to me, "I found the mother here yesterday. She wanted to stay here instead of the Forbidden Forest. I think she'll go back, after her baby can walk."

I nodded. I was a bit fascinated. It was odd to see a foal here. And a mother, in the sense. The Forbidden Forest was practically on the other side of the grounds. But Luna said they wanted to stay here, and I guess here they will stay.

Without knowing, Luna was holding my hand while she was softly encouraging the small thestral. I smiled, knowing how determined Luna's would be.

For a long time, we just stayed there, watching the thestral finally getting up on its legs. We were sitting in the snow as we watched the little guy prance about.

I watched, and then I suddenly felt Luna softly kiss my cheek.

"Merry Christmas Neville."
