Chapter 3- It's a Stand Up
By the time I finally escaped Brianna's evil clutches it was 10 o'clock and raining. honestly, how much worse could my day get. My car was still at school so I trudged back to the school parking lot, hopped into my car soaking wet and drove home.
When I pulled up in the driveway I groaned. The living room light was on and that meant mom was still up. I was in deep shit here.
I drag myself inside, toeing off my shoes at the door and slowly walk to my impending doom. Yes, even though I'm eighteen my parents still ground me. It sucks big time.
I try and sneak past the living room but to no avail. My mom has eyes in the back of her head.
Without even turning around, "Nice of you to finally show up, darling," she told me in a flat voice.
"I- uhh." I tried to put on a poker face.
"Where have you been all this time? You never miss dinner." Her eyes are still trained on the TV which is sporting a new ad for some lotion.
"I was at a friend's house."
She finally turns around, "Really? And was that Friend of yours the reason that I got a call from your school saying you skipped all your afternoon classes."
My already bad poker face faltered. I was about to stutter out a white lie about being sick when I remembered BGBC rule #2: be bluntly honest.
"Yep," I lifted one shoulder in a half shrug. "We had better things to do, so we left. Simple as that."
Mom obviously wasn't expecting that answer because her jaw practically hit the floor. She recovered quickly and stood up. She was several inches smaller but I instantly felt intimidated by her 'I'm in charge mode'
My newfound confidence slipped slightly as I rushed down that hall. "Night Mom," I shot over my shoulder before slamming my door and flipping the lock.
"Elle Maria Capulet! You don't talk to me like that! This better not happen again!" Mom yelled through the door.
"I better get an apology in the morning or your grounded for two weeks," She threatened before I heard her footsteps recede into her room.
I threw myself on my bed with a groan. I buried my head in my pillows before flipping over to let my eyes drift around the room. Dark green walls contrasted with light blue curtains and white carpet. All the furniture was black wood and my desk was pressed against the opposite wall away from my bed, which had a soft blue comforter with black swirls. Fairy lights hung over my bed and posters sporting the fray, the script, and others we plastered on the walls.
A next to my desk led into a small bathroom with red walls with orange accents and a giant mirror over white sink and cabinets.
I glanced at my clock perched on my bedside table. Only to groan again to find it was past midnight. I rolled over and closed my eyes.
Next thing I know Mom is banging on the door yelling that I'll be late if I don't get my butt out of bed. I roll myself out of bed and realize I'm still in my clothes from yesterday. Great. I take a five minute shower, dress in cut offs and an oversized grey sweatshirt, drag a brush through my tangled hair, then fly down the steps.
I sling my bag as I simultaneously stuff my face with cereal.
"You should sit down while you eat," My mom eyes me disapprovingly.
I swallow and throw my bowl in the sink before heading for the door.
"Sorry. Bye Mom. Probably will be back late again so don't wait up," I yell.
