Extra J
The quiet night lays thick in the dark, Jace’s shallow breaths blow stray wisp’s of my hair into the air.
He holds me close to him, one arm wrapped around my torso and the other absent mindingly stroking my hand.
“Are you awake?” I whisper.
Jace peeks an eye open, his lips curved into a tender smile. “What’s wrong?”
I purse my lips, burying my face into his chest.
“Nothing,” I mumble.
And nothing was wrong. We were lying in bed, fully clothed and just wanting to sleep. Jace still had a small apartment with only one bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen, but I couldn’t think of a better place to be.
Jace got a job close by to the college campus where I was studying at and if he wasn’t at my dorm room, I was at his apartment.
Jace doesn’t say anything for a bit as we just lay in his bedroom, the moonlight landing upon us.
Jace’s T-shirt smells like pine trees and the material is soft to my fingers. It was obviously his favorite T-shirt.
“I love you,” he suddenly whispers. My heart rate picks up.
Even though we have been together for almost two years, I still can’t get over the feeling I have when he tells me that. Jace always did that. Those three words were something he said spontaneously and frequently. It wasn’t like I minded….
Brushing his lips across my fingertips, I shiver slightly and he fixes the blankets tighter around me.
“I…” I begin, knowing he is expecting me to say the words back.
“three words…” Jace trails off, his voice holding a smile.
“I am…hungry,” I say, a small smile on my face. In the moonlight, I can see his handsome face grinning back at me, a mock expression of hurt on his face as he pouts.
“I tell you I love you and you say you’re hungry. That hurts my ego,” he mumbles, his lips suddenly on my face, brushing butterfly kisses on my brows, eyelids, lips…
“mhmmmm,” I mutter, suppressing a laugh as he kisses me. “You said it? I didn’t hear a thing.”
“I love you,” he growls, the tip of his nose skimming a line down my jaw.
“Sorry, what?” I ask again, teasing him.
Jace throws me a disapproving glare and I grin cheekily back at him, the moon light highlighting strands of his hair in the dark.
“All I want to do is lay here with you and tell you I love you and you joke about it,” he pouts.
Laughing, I kiss him again. “Sorry,” I mumble, our lips brushing against each other. “I love you,” I whisper back softly.
He chuckles lowly and I play with the short strands of his hair.
“I love you,” I say again, our laughter quieting down.
“I love you,” he responds.
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
Jace gazes tenderly down at me. “Do you really need me to tell you that I love you for you to understand that?”
My voice catches in my throat and I blink, his sincerity and intensity in his eyes catching me off guard.
Capturing my wrists, he seals a gentle kiss on each of them. “That is for never doing anything when Taylor hurt you.”
Jace stares blankly at my arms, the bruises long gone but the invisible scars running deep.
Self consciously, I try to pull my arms back but Jace stops me.
Holding me tight, he never lets me go.
When the moon light begins to turn into a dusted pink hue, spanning across his blank walls as if they were spread on by a butter knife, we both just continued to lay there in each others presence.
“One creamer…..five stirs clockwise…” I begin.
Jace smiles at me, his chiseled face lighting up. “Lemon-”
The sound of his alarm clock blares out into the air and we both groan. I bury my face into his chest, breathing in the smell of his T-shirt.
“I got this,” Jace breathes out, grabbing his alarm clock and tossing it across the room.
I wince, the bang booming out and the blaring noise ceasing to a pathetic beeerp.
“You have work don’t you?” I ask.
Jace groans. “We’re skipping. Today’s our day.”
I don’t argue with him, the covers warm and toasty.
As my lids begin to close and I drift into a deep slumber, I hear Jace whisper something my ear, his lips brushing my face.
“Sleep well and dream of lemon pie, my love.”
“See you there coffee boy,” I whisper back, a smile on my lips as I drift into sleep, wrapped in Jace’s arms.
