THE NEXT MORNING, LILITH'S HANGOVER HAD SUBSIDED ENOUGH FOR HER TO FEEL SOMEWHAT PREPARED FOR THE 10 HOUR FLIGHT AHEAD OF HER. her black duffel bag was swung over her shoulder as she left her apartment, bringing a few days' worth of clothes, some tylenol (because she'd learned her lesson), two bottles of water, and some gatorade protein bars that she'd found on the floor in her pantry.
she was ready to walk out the door to catch the bus last minute when her phone started buzzing in the pocket of her bag. "who the hell..?" she mumbled to herself, unzipping the pocket to answer her phone begrudgingly.
"have you left yet?"
"marc?" her brows furrowed as she held the phone to her ear with her shoulder, unlocking the door to her apartment with her free hand. "no, i was about to. why?"
"surprise." he said, his voice moderately unenthusiastic. she hated the way she could picture the subtle smirk on his lips.
lilith let out a small groan. "if i go down these stairs to see you sitting there.."
sure enough, after she hung up the phone and made it down the (incomparable) flights of stairs, she saw marc sitting in a black car with the window down. "figured you'd appreciate the ride to the airport."
"and how did you know frenchie wasn't pulling into the complex right after you?" she asked, opening the door.
marc shrugged, smiling over at her. "intuition."
"so.. is this a thing now? we're hanging out?" lilith sat down, closing the door and getting her seatbelt on.
"you said truce." he pointed out, starting to drive towards the airport.
jabez' workers didn't fly out of the JFK, or anything, of course. the airport that their operations flew in and out of was much more secluded, and most people didn't even know it existed. it hardly showed up on any flight radars either, or any flight maps, which frenchie had always said was extremely odd.
it was safer that way, though, flying in and out for missions without worrying about civilian stowaways or raising too much concern. lilith and her coworkers weren't really.. people people, anyway.
"you like music?" marc asked.
lilith looked over at him. "uh.. yeah."
he turned the radio up, which was a relief since the silence in the car had been damn near deafening.
"not whatever the hell this is." she complained when something that sounded to her like a gregorian chant started playing.
the scrunch of her nose, as if she'd smelled something horrible, made marc chuckle. "okay. fine. you pick."
lilith pressed random buttons until she got to a radio station that was playing what she thought was a tame impala song.
the rest of the car ride was so quiet that lilith almost wondered why marc had even volunteered to give her a ride in the first place. a part of her assumed that he just felt a need to give her some sort of special treatment since he'd seen her at what easily could've been her lowest.
regardless, no one other than frenchie had ever willingly spent this much time with her outside of work or school, and the acknowledgement of that made her choose to just welcome the silence.
when they got back to the airport, it was somehow even more awkward.
"spector? didn't know you were coming with us." remy said, moving to clap a hand on marc's shoulder.
he chuckled a little, shaking his head. "no, i'm staying behind. just here to chauffeur."
lilith met frenchie's gaze, shaking her head at the suggestive raise of his brow. she'd have to explain all the recent events to him on the flight.
