IT HAD BEEN NEARLY A MONTH NOW SINCE STEVEN GRANT HAD INTERRUPTED MARC'S MIND. after the fateful night that he had taken a drunk lilith back to her apartment, steven had disappeared.
though he tried not to concern himself too much with why, it certainly was strange. steven had been the other half of his body, the other half of his mind, for as long as he could remember now. as a child, his presence was a comfort. as an adult..? marc could hardly go on proper missions if his body was waking up miles from where he'd fallen asleep.
but lilith had somehow, miraculously, unknowingly, ended it all. there hadn't been a single sign of steven, or of marc's body moving without his doing.
marc liked lilith well enough. she was attractive, he'd be a fool not to admit that to himself. she was funny when she wanted to be, intimidating when she didn't. intelligent, and wholly a mystery to him.
he knew that her dad was an asshole, a dead asshole, that her mom died giving birth to her, and.. that she knew bits and pieces of greek. that was about where his knowledge of lilith ended.
and marc didn't consider himself to have a thirst for knowledge by any means, but something about her made him want to know it all. why she became a mercenary, why she was closed off. he almost wondered if steven was staying at bay because, for once, marc actually wanted to be himself.
lilith had noticed, a few times, that something was up with marc. he knew she had. and despite himself, he didn't want to let her know the extent of his issues. she'd call him crazy, certainly. she'd definitely never want to work a mission with him again, knowing that he had a tendency to pass out and switch personalities. lilith didn't need to know all of that.
though he did his best to remain shielded off from her, she was incredibly easy to talk to. so much so that he'd accidentally revealed that his birthday was coming up, following up his comment by assuring her that he hated his birthday and wanted nothing to do with it.
"why not?" she'd asked, chuckling as if he was joking about the whole thing.
"i just.. i don't like my birthday." he replied solemnly, noting the way her smile fell. he hated seeing her look so disappointed, but he didn't really want to share his whole life story with her.
"a march birthday makes sense for you." she'd said after a moment, taking a sip of her hot chocolate. she'd sworn off alcohol.
marc looked over at her, brows furrowed. "how does that.. make sense for me?"
"i saw a magazine the other day that said people born in march are supposed to be compassionate and romantic." she said. "something about the.. pisces? is that the zodiac sign?" she shrugged, chuckling.
he nodded. "yeah.. those are definitely the words i'd use to describe myself."
"have you ever been in a relationship?"
her question was so blunt that it caught him entirely off guard. "i, uh.. no. not officially, anyway. have you?"
lilith shook her head, swirling the hot chocolate around in its mug that read 'don't mess with texas'. "no, i've always been more interested in a... single night arrangement than something serious."
marc nodded, looking down at his own drink, a can of coke. "yeah. yeah, me too."
"sometimes it freaks me out when we actually have similarities."
that made him chuckle. "you know, it freaks me out, too." he took a sip of his drink, forcing himself to look away from her.
"would you ever see yourself in one?"
