I slide one leg out of the window and the the other. Sitting on the sill I take one look back and then jump the two foot drop to the ground below. I start to run, looking back every now and then, paranoid of someone following me.When I'm finally out of the sight of my house I slow down to a walk and button my sweater as far up as it'll go. The chilly air rushes by me and I hug myself. I reach the corner and see a blue mustang shining in the moonlight. I jog over to the car and lean down to the front seat window.
"Hey, Sophie. Hurry and jump in," Mary says.
I run around the front of the car and quickly open the car door, step in, and close it back behind me.
"Hey," I sigh and slump with relief in the seat.
She smiles.
"Are you ready," she asks.
"As ready as I'll ever be," I reply
leaning forward to turn the radio up."Shake it up baby now!" Blares out from the radio.
Mary and I turn towards each other and say in a deeper note,
"Shake it up baby""Twist and shout," I continue and Mary mocks the words.
"COME ON COME ON COME ON BABY NOW!"
Mary follows after, "Come on baby."
We continue to perform our on concert with The Beatles until the song dies down.We laugh as she pulls into the drive-in theatre. She parks in the lot that sits in front of the screens with the seats for people without cars on an elevated spot behind. She leans forward and switches on the radio station for the movie.
"See," she says, "there's nothing to worry about. It's not like we are doing something illegal. We're just watching a movie."
"I know I still feel a little guilty though."
She laughs and the movie starts.
It was another one of the beach movies that seems to be popular this year, but don't interest me. Around 15 minutes into the movie I start to doze off. I wake myself up and look over at Mary. She is staring intently at the screen with a dreamy look in her eye every time the main guy character flashes onto the screen.
"I'm going to get a coca-cola and some popcorn," I say to her and she mumbles an answer I can't understand.
I get out the car and duck in front and go the long way around to waste time. I walk up the stair to the seated section.
There is only one person sitting in the many rows of seats. He sits in the second row,on the end, right beside the aisle. He leans back with his feet on the seat in front of him, looking around with a dazed look in his eyes.
