I breathe in a deep, shuddering breath. I hadn't realized I'd been holding it. A vision of a fist flying towards my face flashes in my mind. I shudder and walk to the concession stand. I get in line and when I reach the counter I ask for two popcorns and two coca-colas.

A fight begins in the line behind me between a guy in a red madras shirt and a guy with greased back hair and a tight, fitted tank top.

I walk away quickly from the confrontation as the people behind the counter yell at them to "Cut it out!"
I arrive back down to where the boy was sitting and hurry past it and down the stairs to Mary's blue mustang.

"Hey, where have you been," she says grabbing a popcorn container.

"Long story," I say looking down at the floorboard and taking a sip of my drink.

A few minutes later the movie ends.

"Well, that movie was great."

I laugh, "Well, if you like that type of movie, I guess so."

She looks of at me.

"Well, I do," she sticks her tongue out at me as she pulls out of the drive-in.

I switch the station over and I Get Around by The Beach Boys blares from the speakers. I bob my head along with the song and hum on the harmonizing parts.

Every now and then the boy from the movies face flashes through my mind. His dark pleading eyes, his silent desperation, and cruel facade. Mary  interrupts my thoughts.

"Let's meet up with Leroy and James." I hesitate before answering.

"Um. Sure, why not?"

She laughs and leans over to turn on the radio. The car picks up speed as we drive down the main road. After a few songs the car turns in a drive-in Dairy Queen.

A red mustang sits off to the side of the building. Two boys sit in the car and one on the trunk with his feet hanging in the backseat. We pull up beside them and the one sitting in the passenger seat whistles. Mary laughs and steps out of the car to lean against his door.

They begin to talk as the guy sitting in the drivers seat hops out over the door and saunters over to where I'm sitting in the passenger seat of Mary's mustang.

"Hey, Babe," he says leaning against the car door.

"Hey, James."

He leans in closer and whisper in my ear.

"Let's go for a ride."

His breath reeks of alcohol.

"What?" I say panicked.

James runs around the car and hops over the door and into the front seat. He salutes Mary as she chases after her car but James presses hard on the gas.

Dust flies and before I know it we're leaving the Dairy Queen parking lot for somewhere I'm not sure of.
