Although it isn't yet October, the wind blows cold. The sun hides somewhere behind the trees and the dreary, cloud ridden sky. The perfect Hollywood setting for a funeral.
My long, black skirt is pressed against my legs, the hem tickling the dark hose around my ankles. I pull my plain, black sweater close around my neck and button the last remaining button, a silent sign of respect towards my grandmother and her conservative ways.
I stand beside my parents as we take one final look at my grandmother before they seal the casket, make it final. I reach out and touch my grandmother's cold hand. After a few seconds, I pull I back, nod, and step away from the casket to return to my seat. I hear the click and seal behind my back and when I turn to take my seat, the shiny top of the casket is all that is visible.
My mother and father take their seats on either side of me. My mother wipes false tears from her cheek underneath her new black hat that she was all too excited to wear. I am disgusted but, at least she is putting on a front. My father just sits, facing front, a blank expression on his face. Probably thinking of his next meeting and how he'll present his new best idea for the car industry. He was promoted to Vice President of his company. A reward for never being home and delaying my grandmother's funeral.
I stand and walk past all the rows of people. I keep walking until I'm at least one hundred yards away and lean against a lone tree. I look up at the large branches twisting upward, some of its leaves starting to turn color and fall to the ground.
I hear a stick break behind me but, I don't bother turning around. It's probably just another person joining the funeral late. Pretending to care.
A hand lands on my shoulder and I hiccup air in surprise.
"Shhh," the voice urges and I turn around.
"Dallas? What are you doing here?" I whisper.
