She buried her face in her knees. Dayna came scrambling up the branch. "What's going on?!" She said in panic. Jack didn't take his eyes off Star. "I-it's ok" he said in concern, waving her off. She refused to leave, coming and settling down beside a trembling Star. Jack wrapped his arms around Star and pulled her in. She brought her hands back to her sides and tried to calm down. But before she did, a single tear spilled out of her eye and fell down her cheek.
Star had fallen asleep, her head leaning on Jack's shoulder, tears still silently trailing down her face. Jack marveled at them. They looked like liquified diamonds. He stopped one from hitting the tree branch and stared at it. Dayna looked groggily at him. "What's that?" Jack turned his finger, making the light dance on it. "One of her tears." He said, not taking his eyes off of it. "Wow. Really? It's so pretty!" Dayna exclaimed. Jack nodded. "Anyway, I'm going to get her to her little like, bed thingy." He said and scooped her up easily. Unlike Dayna, she weighed almost nothing in his arms. He settled her down on the soft springy pile of ferns and sat beside her. Dayna followed and went over to him. "Night" she said and kissed him. He blushed when she moved away and went to her bed. Not much later, he went to his bed and fell asleep.
Star sat up fast and tried to catch her breath. She tried to remember her dream, being launched away from something she loved and not being able to stop it. She couldn't speak, for she had tried calling out and screaming. She remembered Jack shaking her and trying to wake her up when she had screamed. She shuddered, curled up, and closed her eyes again. She didn't plan to sleep, just think. She heard Jack get up and walk over to her. She opened one eye and looked at him. He jumped and laughed softly. "You scared me for a second." He said and kneeled beside the 'bed'
"You ok?" Star shrugged and nodded. "Yeah. Just bringing back those memories..." She trailed off and looked away. Jack nodded. "Yeah I understand. Well, me and Dayna are going to go try to find something edible, if you want to come." Star shook her head. "No thank you. I am just going to stay here and clean up a little, maybe make nicer bed. Not that these are not nice..." She said. Jack gave a crooked grin. "It's all right. I'm sure I have a leaf or two in my hair somewhere anyway" he said and picked a twig out of Star's long white hair. "See you later" he said and left. Star sighed and started thinking of things she could do before they got back. She was grateful Jack didn't mention her dream, and she was sure he knew. Dayna gritted her teeth when she saw the faint smile on Jack's face when he climbed down the tree house and joined her. But she swallowed her feelings and forced herself to ask how Star was. Jack nodded and gave the crooked grin she knew so well. "She's great" he said. "Did you know that her eyes change color because of her emotions? And.." Dayna tuned him out and looked away. What's so great about Star? She thought. Without saying anything she muttered to herself and jogged into the woods.
