Kayleigh’s POV
I swallowed hard, feeling my stomach do complete flips. My throat quickly got dry. “What do you mean?” I felt goose bumps rise from my skin. “You’re father… he’s MIA…” My jaw dropped and I fell to the floor, letting the tears stream down my rosed cheeks. “No.” I shook my head and dropped my phone, crying harder then ever. I felt Justin wrap his arms around my shoulders, kneeling next to me. “Kayleigh, what is going on?” “My dad.” I began to cry harder. “What about him?” He said with a concerned tone. “He’s MIA.” “MIA like, Missing In Action?” “Yes Justin! My father is missing!” I snapped at him, he flinched. “I’m sorry…” I made eye contact with him. “It’s okay.” He used his thumb to wipe away my tears that were quickly pouring from my eyes. I picked my phone up from the ground. “Mom… When did you find out?” “This afternoon…” My eyes shot open. “What! And you didn’t tell me sooner!” “Kayleigh… I didn’t know what to make of it.” “Well, I’m coming home.”
I looked up at Justin; his eyes hinted he was disappointed. “No,” my mother began, “You are not coming home. Coming home won’t do anything. You need to stay with Justin. You need to be with him, he makes you happy…” I knew Justin could hear what she said because his eyes lit up. “But mom, what about you?” “I’ll be fine. Just please… pray.” “I will…” I began to cry even more, wiping my nose with the back of my hand. I hung my head low in sorrow. “I love you mom.” “I love you too sweetie…” I slowly hung up the phone, placing it gently on the ground. “Justin… I didn’t even get to say goodbye… or I loved him.” I placed my hands over my face; Justin grabbed me, pulling me into his knees. “I know Kayleigh.” “I wonder if my brother knows…” “Maybe you should call him?” I looked into Justin’s caramel eyes. “I haven’t spoken to him in months.” “Well, this will be the perfect opportunity. Just give it a try? Let’s go back to the room so I can cuddle you, real hard.” I felt a smile come across my face. “My mom is right, you do make me happy.” He placed his lips on mine, taking my hand and escorting me up to the room. “What if I never see him again Justin?” I felt more tears on the surface. He opened the door and stopped as soon as the door shut. “Don’t think like that, think positive. I know it’s hard but I hate seeing you upset.” I sniffled as he took me to the bed. He turned off the lights, climbed into bed pulling the covers down. I crawled next to him, pulling the covers back up. He held me tight. “Are you ready to call your brother?” “Um,” I hesitated. “Maybe we should wait until tomorrow, it is kinda late.” He looked over at the alarm clock, “It’s 1 am. Just try him.” I sighed and pulled up his number, swallowing hard. I clicked call, and put the phone on speaker so Justin can hear too. It rang, “Hello?” I heard a deep voice. “J-Jake?” “Hey Kayleigh. It’s been awhile…” I gulped. “Yeah.” “How is life treating you?” “Good, I guess. How about you?” “Alright I guess. Any boyfriends I need to keep an eye on.” “Well, I have a boyfriend, but I think it would be a little easier then you expected to keep an eye on him.” “What do you mean?” “You didn’t hear?” “Obviously not if I’m asking.” “True.” “So tell me, who is this guy?” “Um… Justin Bieber.” He let out a laugh. “You’re funny Kay, you always had a sense of humor. But really who?” “Jake, I swear. Look.” I handed Justin the phone. “Say something.” He cleared his throat. “Um, Hi Jake.” Jake was silent. “Who is this?” “Justin Bieber.” “Damn, she wasn’t lying.” “Yeah bro.” Justin laughed lightly. I took the phone back. “See, now I’m calling you for a reason… I wouldn’t just call you at random after months without speaking.” “Okay.” “Um, there is something… that happened.” I began to have a tingling feeling in my nose, indicating I was about to cry. “Dad.. He’s…. missing.” “What the hell do you mean missing?” “He left for Afghanistan a couple weeks ago... and mom, called me telling me.” I let the tears out, Justin was there to wipe them away and comfort me. I could tell now he was crying as well. “I didn’t even know he went back…” “I didn’t even get to say goodbye.” I interrupted. There was a long pause of silence exchanged from each end. “How is Debbie? I mean mom…” “I don’t know.” “How don’t you know?” he sounded confused. “I’m not in the state.” “Then where the hell are you?” “New York…” “Why?” “I’m on tour with Justin… I won’t be home for months.” “Who is going to check up on her?” “I don’t know…I called aunt Jen but who knows with her.” “True.” “Well…” I began, “I’m going to go to bed.” “Can I call you soon? I missed talking to my baby sister.” “Of course.” “Alright, cool. Say goodbye to Justin for me. Love you sis.” “I love you too Jakey.” The line clicked. I let out a breath of fresh air. “See…” Justin butted in. “It was pretty easy right?” “I guess.” I let more tears out. “I know this is going to be hard, I’m here for you if you need someone just to be there okay? I love you.” “I love you too Justin.” I felt my eyes get heavy, I could hear Justin’s breathing regulate and his heart beat. Was all of this actually happening? Is there a chance I won’t ever see my father again? My best friend? The last thing that was said between us were hateful words. I regret it all. I closed my eyes. “I love you dad…” I mumbled out in a faint tone. I cried my self to sleep.
