Jill will leave you lonely...

"She's probably sick again, stop looking all mopey-eyed," Jean said with a definite edge to his tone.

(Y/n) would've said he'd gone back to his old ways, if he hadn't had such a soft voice when he said it. Almost like he was trying to reassure her, in his own way.

Marco's tone, however, was sweet through and through, "Stacy might just be late, there's no reason to worry."

Marco was wrong. Stacy wasn't just late, she hadn't shown up at all. Remembering how she was sick before Jean's party, (Y/n) couldn't help but think Jean was right and that she'd caught another cold or something. But wasn't it too early to get sick again? Maybe Stacy's immune system was just bad.

It shouldn't have been worrying, it really shouldn't have been. Stacy would just call her later and everything would be fine. She'd laugh about how scared she'd been and feel embarrassed by how much she'd overreacted.

But a feeling that something was wrong lingered over her mind. She could barely listen all throughout class, only feeling her heart skip a beat when Stacy's name was called and received no answer.

Mr. Smith's class was a blur. (Y/n) couldn't focus when her best friend was missing, without a single word to say where she'd gone. She'd tried texting Stacy but she didn't have time for a call before class started. No response.

Armin and Mikasa accosted her on her way to lunch. Mikasa was quiet, almost reluctant, as though he was forced to tag along. A part of (Y/n) wanted him to warm up to her, and she found herself asking how he was doing.

Mikasa looked surprised by the question, before he answered, "Good." in a soft voice. She could swear that the ravenette had a small blush on his face as he hid his face in his scarf. The girl smiled, glad that she could make him happy, if even a little bit.

(Y/n), Armin, and Mikasa walked single-file to the cafeteria so that they wouldn't block the hallway. Once there, they took a seat at an empty table and began chatting animatedly.

Armin had read a few new books and was very eager to share his thoughts on them with (Y/n). Mikasa watched the two talk like one would watch a tennis match, making the girl feel bad that he was being left out.

"Do you like to read, Mikasa?" (Y/n) asked kindly.

Mikasa shrugged, his black hair falling over his face for a moment before he brushed it back. He was incredibly handsome, (Y/n) realized, and she found herself a little embarrassed for noticing it now. He seemed to realize she was staring and gave her a small half-smile.

She didn't notice the way Armin stiffened at the way (Y/n) admired Mikasa.

Lunch was so relaxing that (Y/n) had nearly forgotten how worried she was about Stacy. But as soon as the bell rung, the realization seemed to press on her shoulders and back like a weighted blanket, but in the worst way possible.

She wasn't usually this nervous when her friend hadn't responded to her texts, but something felt off. It was unexplainable, but she was so sure that something had gone terribly wrong.

(Y/n) was distracted all throughout history class, leading to her being picked on more than normal by the short teacher. Mr. Ackerman seemed to take pleasure in calling her name whenever he had a question, leading to many embarrassing moments. She decided that today was not the day to ask him about tutoring and fled the classroom as soon as class was over.

Mr. Hange seemed to notice (Y/n)'s distress, and he swooped down on the poor girl, enveloping her in a hug and telling her that she could talk to him whenever. Although the girl was thankful that her teacher cared enough to try to make her feel better, it felt creepy to have a teacher hugging her.

The rest of the classes seemed to drag on forever. She lolled her head back and stared at the ceiling several times, trying to reassure her speeding heart that everything was okay.

Stacy was just sick. That's all.

By the time school was over, (Y/n) was rushing to get out the door and home to call Stacy. She practically ran home, heart pounding in her ears. The road seemed to stretch on forever, but she refused to slow down.

About halfway home, she wished she had just called her at the school. Sure, there wasn't much privacy, but at least she wouldn't be horribly out of breath and worried for even longer than she already was.

She just needed to know Stacy was okay.

(Y/n) hadn't even touched the doorknob when the front door was flung wide open. Her mother stood there, eyes wild as she enveloped her daughter in a crushing hug and began to cry into her shoulder. "Oh, (Y/n), thank goodness, thank goodness."

"Mom?" (Y/n) was perplexed, but she felt a sudden sense of foreboding. This couldn't be good, "Is everything okay? Why are you crying?"

"You should... you should sit down before I tell you." Her mother wiped away her tears, suddenly looking nervous.

Something was definitely wrong. (Y/n)'s throat constricted as her mother led her into the living room with a reassuring hand on her back. She took a seat and nervously looked over to her mother.

She seemed to sink into the leather as her heart pounded. What was going on?

After a moment, her mother took a deep breath and said the words that made (Y/n)'s world fall apart.

"Stacy was just found dead by the side of the road."

...dying in a filthy ditch.
